Parents Blame Their Spoiled Children On Toy Commercials

A group called Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood has started a letter-writing campaign to America’s toy makers asking them to stop advertising their products. Why? Because that advertising makes kids want their toys. And naturally parents must then buy the toys.
Because it’s not like the parents can’t turn off the television. Or, you know, just tell the kids “no”.
Honestly, would it kill people to exercise a bit of personal responsibility now and then?

Turn of the TV and make your kids read or play outside.

    It’s that simple.

They have time to come up with this crap but don’t have time to be parents? Their kids are probably parked in front of the TV while they type the letters!

These are the same people who demanded Kellogg stop using Tony the Tiger because it made their kids want sugary cereal.

Oh, I see. I’ve been doing it wrong. I’m not supposed to deprive my child of even the smallest whim or fancy. I am supposed to cater to their every desire. In order to stay financially solvent though I will have to sue every advertiser who targets children (and throw RJ Reynolds in the mix since they have a cartoon camel that can only be there to appeal to children).

Either that or I can continue to break their little hearts and tell them no on occasion. But I’m sure that’s considered child abuse.

Turn the TV off and get the kids jobs.

The extra money will come in handy as we struggle to recover from this 2nd bush recession.

    There a winning marketing strategy.

There are probably some companies out there who have tried this – but we never heard about it (how would we?).

Best comments ever by Bob and Rugby. You guys are exactly right. I used to take my kids to the store, if they whined and threw fits for toys or candy, no matter what we had in the cart, or what we came for, we parked the cart, and left. Only took a few times when they were very small, they never pulled that crap, again. I never had to raise my voice, or jerk them around. Kids have to know who the dang boss is!!!

My kids grew up in Army housing in Germany. We only had one channel and the programing was not the best. So they found other things to do besides being glued to the tube. Plus they were not exposed to the advertising.

When we returned to the States my parents commented on how well behaved my kids were. They weren’t asking Grandma and Grandpa to buy them things all the time. They thought it was refreshing.

I still think it was the lack of commercials that had that effect.

On the other hand we need commercials for the system to work.

My daughter, who grew up without commercials, now has children of her own. But TV has commercials. So she has tried a radical method. She limits what her kids can watch and when they can watch it.

    Remarkable.

It’s nothing that can’t be cured by
    a) love
    b) work
    c) and a bit of F.I.T.A. when necessary….. (foot-in-the-ass)

We canceled cable and got rid of the TV almost two years ago (Feb 07). The kids complained initially but got over it. One of the best things we ever did for our family.

We went without cable for quite a while. I enjoyed it, but when we moved into our new house cable was fairly cheap with internet so we got it.

We still aren’t much of a TV family. Not having TV for a long time helped.
