Parents Aborting Non-Perfect Babies

"[S]urely this is just part of our evolution?" remarks one idiot about the growing tendency in the UK for babies to be aborted because of, sometimes, minor birth defects.

Daily Mail, UK - The ethical storm over abortions has been renewed as it emerged that terminations are being carried out for minor, treatable birth defects.

Late terminations have been performed in recent years because the babies had club feet, official figures show.

Babies are being aborted with only minor defects.
Other babies were destroyed because they had webbed fingers or extra digits.

Such defects can often be corrected with a simple operation or physiotherapy.

The revelation sparked fears that abortion is increasingly being used to satisfy couples' desire for the 'perfect' baby.

A leading doctor said people were right to be 'totally shocked' that abortions were being carried out for such conditions.

Campaigners warned we are turning into a society that can no longer tolerate imperfection. Doctors were recently told they can now screen IVF embryos to try to weed out inherited cancers.

Ethical groups fear parents are opting for abortions because they are not told of the support and help available if they continued with the pregnancy.

Details of the terminations emerged as new figures revealed an alarming rise in the use of an abortion pill that has been linked to 10 deaths.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that between 1996 and 2004, 20 babies were aborted after 20 weeks because they had a club foot.

Club Foot, for those that do not know, is a condition that Kristi Yamaguchi, figure skating gold medalist in 1992, and Tom Dempsey, who holds the record for the longest field goal kick in the NFL like 30 years ago, both were born with. But apparently, this condition is sooooo terrible that we should have just killed Mrs. Yamaguchi and Mr. Dempsey at birth because their life wasn't worth living...

But really, the culture surrounding abortion only leads to abuses like this. What is the difference between my wanting to kill my baby because he'll inconvenience me with physical disabilities and my wanting to kill my baby because I can't afford both him and a new Mercedes... This is the culture we live in and it is absolutely sick.

My husband’s family had some serious medical problems, which helped convince us not to have kids (that and triplets on both sides and twins on his).

I’m totally with the forum’s popular opinion on this one.

Should state that so that EVERYONE can understand it, even Robert.

You can choose NOT to have children before they are conceived.  There are times you can’t of course, but abortion has become too close to birth control for some people, including an old high school friend of mine who had three like getting her nails done, then gave her fourth away.

But, having said that, the attitude here of the regulars toward killing children in Iraq belies their concern for babies and children.

What happened in Haditha, Iraq?
Witnesses and others tell a consistent story as the Pentagon investigates

On Tuesday, for the first time, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki spoke about the Haditha case. He said that Iraqi and multinational forces must respect human rights and the rights of Iraqi citizens, and a family cannot be killed because someone is fighting terrorists

GET IT, BROOKE????

Witnesses say Marines search the area for the bomber. They storm a house directly across from the attack, shooting as they approach.

A video shot by a local journalism student purports to show the bloody aftermath of what happened. Inside are 77-year-old Abdul Hamid — blind and in a wheelchair — his 66-year-old wife and others: sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

Local coroners’ reports obtained by NBC News say Abdul Hamid was shot in the stomach and head. The reports say his wife and five other relatives were also killed by multiple gunshot wounds.

Four inside the house survived, including 9-year-old Iman.

“The Americans came into the room where my father was praying and shot him. Then they went to my grandmother and killed her, too,” Iman says.

During the raid, Abdul Hamid’s house caught fire. Witnesses say Marines then moved next door to the house of Younis Hamid. Nine people were inside, and eight were killed — five of them children.

Twelve-year-old Safa says she survived by hiding under the bed.

“They came in and shot all of us,” she says. “I pretended I was dead.”

Witnesses say Marines then moves to a third location — a taxi parked by the side of the road. In it, residents say, were four university students and a driver. A witness watching from a nearby rooftop says Marines took the five men out of the car and executed them.

The driver screamed in English, “Please, please!” but they shot him in the body.

Other witnesses say two hours passed as more Marines and helicopters arrived to lock down the neighborhood.

Around 10:30 a.m., Marines stormed the house of Eid Ahmed, where they allegedly separate his four sons from the women and children — and killed the men.

Nine-year-old Khalid was in the house.

“This is my father!” he screams. “God will take my revenge!”

NBC News asked the U.S. military to comment on this report. So far, the U.S. military here in Iraq only said that it takes the allegations seriously but cannot comment on ongoing investigations.

But you’ve already got them tried, convicted and executed, and all because you hate our troops and President.

Where are you, Diane, when troops give out their own food rations to children? Where are you when the soldier’s wives scour yard sales for clothing and shoes so that our soldiers can hand them out to civilians? Where are you when schools are opened, and decades old power and sewage grids are rebuilt? Where are your words of praise when Iraqi police and military officers hug and thank our men and women in uniform for being there? Where are you when women, clad in the hijab are finally, finally able to vote, and send their daughters to school?

And Diane, where are your words of condemnation for the foriegn terrorists who blow up children and women all for the hopes of getting 72 virgins? Where are your words of condemnation for the cries of “Allah Akbar” when innocents are slaughtered? Where is your condemnation for the thugs who dare not put on a uniform and stand to be counted for anything?

ALCOHOL USE AND PREVENTING ALCOHOL-RELATED PROBLEMS AMONG YOUNG ADULTS IN THE MILITARY

Heavy alcohol use remains a persistent problem in the U.S. military and is especially prevalent among young adult (18- to 25-year-old) service members. According to Drs. Genevieve Ames and Carol Cunradi, certain characteristics of the military culture may contribute to heavy drinking in this population. The authors compare the rates of alcohol use among young adults in all four branches of the military with rates for young adult civilians, including college students. In addition to describing the relevant risk factors, such as a workplace culture in which alcohol is accepted as a way to deal with stress, boredom, and loneliness, the article also examines strategies that may help mitigate risk and reduce heavy drinking in this group. Research is needed to evaluate these strategies, which included alcohol use policies, making alcohol use less glamorous, and promoting overall good health.

GANGSTAS IN THE MILITARY
By Michelle Malkin · May 04, 2006 01:00 PM
Been meaning to get to this disturbing Chicago Sun-Times story on gangbangers in the US armed forces. Reporter Frank Main publicized photos taken by Army reservist Jeffrey Stoleson in Iraq. These are just a few of hundreds of images of defaced military vehicles, barricades, etc., that Stoleson has snapped:

GO TO LINK FOR PHOTOS OF THE KIND OF TRASH AMERICANS IRAQIS HAVE TO FACE

The problem is a longstanding one, but according to Stoleson, higher-ups discourage troops from calling attention to it: Main reports:

“I have identified 320 soldiers as gang members from April 2002 to present,” said Scott Barfield, a Defense Department gang detective at Fort Lewis in Washington state. “I think that’s the tip of the iceberg.”
Of paramount concern is whether gang-affiliated soldiers’ training will make them deadly urban warriors when they return to civilian life and if some are using their access to military equipment to supply gangs at home, said Barfield and other experts.

‘They don’t try to hide it’

Jeffrey Stoleson, an Army Reserve sergeant in Iraq for almost a year, said he has taken hundreds of photos of gang graffiti there.

In a storage yard in Taji, about 18 miles north of Baghdad, dozens of tanks were vandalized with painted gang symbols, Stoleson said in a phone interview from Iraq. He said he also took pictures of graffiti at Camp Scania, about 108 miles southeast of Baghdad, and Camp Anaconda, about 40 miles north of Baghdad. Much of the graffiti was by Chicago-based gangs, he said.

...Because of the extreme danger of his mission in Iraq, Stoleson said he does not relish the idea of working alongside gang members, whom he does not trust. Stoleson said he once reported to a supervisor that he suspected a company of soldiers in Iraq was rife with gang members.

“My E-8 [supervising sergeant] told me not to ruffle their feathers because they were doing a good job,” he said.

Stoleson said he has spotted soldiers in Iraq with tattoos signifying their allegiance to the Vice Lords and the Simon City Royals, another street gang spawned in Chicago.

“They don’t try to hide it,” Stoleson said.

The safety concerns are not hypothetical. Last year, I reported on a cop-killing Marine, Lance Corporal Andres Raya--who had been caught on videotape with Latino gang members smoking marijuana and throwing gang signs after breaking into a school gym, stealing computer equipment, tearing up an American flag, and spelling out “F--- BUSH” with the pieces--which were left on the gym floor.

As I noted at the time, the question isn’t what got into Raya when he entered the military. The question is why and how Raya—who police say had a propensity for violence well before he joined the Marines—got into our military in the first place. Few have challenged the Pentagon’s decision to let admitted illegal aliens--some using illegal fake documents-- join the armed forces. Now, the FBI has assigned investigators to probe ties between US soldiers and gang alliances:

Of particular concern are reports that the Folk Nation, consisting of more than a dozen gangs in the Chicago area, is placing young members in the military in an effort to gather information about weapons and tactics, said FBI Special Agent Andrea Simmons, who is based in El Paso, Texas.
“Our understanding is that they find members without a criminal history so that they can join, and once they get out, they will have a new set of skills that they can apply to criminal enterprises,” Simmons said. “This could be a concern for any law enforcement agency that has to deal with gangs on a daily basis.”

Chicago gang symbols can be found amid other graffiti, mostly in latrines on U.S. military bases such as Camp Fallujah in Iraq’s Anbar Province.

There’s an interesting discussion over at Military.com.

The White House seems to be shrugging off the reports.

Question: Do we really want thugs who mark their territory like animals and swear allegiance to criminal enterprises serving in uniform? Are we nuts?

The question answers itself.

*********

And yet, Brooke pontificates:

I hope YOU sleep well tonight, Dhiane, at the expense of those whom you call murderous, alcoholic gang members.

Michelle Malkin calls them that, the government calls them that, Bhrooke.

Diane, I have a question for you:

Where were you when three teenage christian students were kidnapped and DECAPITATED by your poor little misunderstood Iraqis?

Where were you when women and children were made to watch their father and husband flayed alive because Saddam thought their father was a political enemy?

Where were you when mass graves, (the REAL graves, not the ones made up in the Salon story you love to quote so much), were uncovered?

Where were you when Iraqi men and women braved those you and your ilk call minutemen to vote for a democratic government?

Most importantly, where the fuck where you when 3,000 of YOUR OWN CONTRYMEN were murdered before your very eyes?

My guess?

You were sitting in the local starbucks, talking to your fellow socialist wannabe silver spoon fed America hating ilk, who have NOT ONE FUCKING CLUE what people like Casey Sheehan and Pat Tillman sacrificed so you can come here and desecrate their memories.

See Diane, your problem isn’t that you are a liberal; your problem is you hate America and all it stands for. At some point during your sheltered life, you were programmed by some liberal hack professor whose closest attempt at being a real man was when he put on a fake Army costume for halloween to believe that all the people who stand in the shadows and bleed for you are not only wrong, but immoral. Your need to repetitavely bash our military and our country as a whole, while giving a COMPLETE PASS to any wrongdoing by Al-Quida is not only ignorant, but extremely selfish and arrogant. There are millions of people around the world who would kill for the chance to have what you have, and look how you show your gratitude. Maybe if you actually had to work for something a day in your life, then you could begin to grasp what scarifices were made on your behalf to make this nation great.

But here you sit, on a weekend dedicated to rememberance of our soldiers, spitting on their graves. How very American of you Diane.

But that isn’t the truely pathetic thing. What’s truely pathetic is the fact that you actually believe you are speaking truth to power when you engage in this shameless insulting of our soldiers, while explaining away the actions of those who engage in horrific atrocities against their OWN PEOPLE.

In conclusion, I would like to be the first of many to let you know that if you feel like this:

“Are you proud of what our country has become?

I’m certainly not.” - Diane
