Papers Please: Democrat Jim Moran Demands To See Town Hall Questioner’s ID Before Answering Question
For the record, Jim Moran has voted “no” on bills that would require identification to prove you’re an eligible voter before casting a ballot in elections. But now he’s checking ID’s before he answers questions from a crowd.
All the hostility and arrogance Democrats have directed at the tea party/town hall protests has done more damage to them and their causes than the protests themselves, I think. They’re pouring gas on the fire.
Every time some Joe Sixpack gets told he’s a Hitler impersonator by the Obama administration, or that he’s un-American by someone like Nancy Pelosi, I think his dedication to the movement is galvanized.
I’m not saying that the Democrats’ only option amidst these protests is to cave in and do whatever the protesters want (though that might not be a bad idea if they want to stay in office), but is it too much to ask for a bit less arrogance and a bit more open-minded listening?
Update: Another good point. Moran is opposed to identification requirements in the health care bill too.
Earlier this week, Rep. Jim Moran (D., Va.) berated attendees at his town-hall meeting for not being residents of his district, going so far as to demand a driver’s license from one of his questioners to prove his residence. Too bad Moran isn’t equally committed to verifying the identity of people who would receive benefits under the health-care reform legislation he is supporting. While there is language in the House bill requiring that their incomes be verified, there is no requirement that their identity or citizenship be confirmed before they receive taxpayer-subsidized health benefits.
You have to show identification if you want to talk to Moran about the health care bill. But you won’t have to show identification to get taxpayer-subsidized health care if Moran and his buddies get their way.
