Palin And “Troopergate”

Coming into the second day of the Sarah Palin mania the Democrats have shifted their talking points about McCain’s new VP. They started with “She’s too inexperienced” and then backed away from that when they realized that she, in fact, has accomplished more in her two years as Governor of Alaska than Obama has his entire political career. Now they’re on to “Troopergate,” which has Palin using her power as Governor to get an Alaska State Trooper who also just happened to be her ex-brother-in-law canned.
Wikipedia has a decent summary of the scandal:

On July 11, 2008, Palin dismissed Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan for not adequately filling state trooper vacancies, and because he “did not turn out to be a team player on budgeting issues.”[56] She instead offered him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he turned down.[57][58]
Her power to fire him is not in dispute, but Monegan alleged that his dismissal may have been an abuse of power tied to his reluctance to fire Palin’s former brother-in-law, Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a divorce and child custody battle with Palin’s sister, Molly McCann.[59] Palin is currently being investigated by an independent investigator hired by the Alaska Legislature[60] to determine whether she abused her power when she fired Monegan. Palin has admitted that her staff had made at least 25 contacts with public safety officials about firing her sister’s ex-husband, including one where an employee claimed to speak for her although she has stated that he acted without her permission or knowledge.

From that Palin’s actions do appear to be pretty bad, but it’s worth noting that the Trooper in question who was fired was no victim in this matter. He is a drunk and an abusive father who was, frankly, a liability to both the state as his employer and his fellow law enforcement officers. Again, from Wikipedia:

In 2006, before Palin was governor, Wooten was suspended for ten days for threatening to kill McCann’s (and Palin’s) father, tasering his 11-year-old stepson, drinking beer in his squad car, and violating game laws. After a union protest, the suspension was reduced to five days.

Wooten deserved to be fired. Palin asked Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan to fire Wooten. Monegan refused, so Palin fired Monegan.
That’s what good executives do.

Was he driving drunk in his squad car? (Drinking beer in the squad car would be a good indication.)

If he was how is he NOT fired and charged with DUI?

Acting on personal knowledge to remove a huge liability to the state is a good thing.

With the Dems good is bad and bad is good.

  • robert108

I don’t have to explain anything to you. I take her word for it, since I have been in a similar position with a rebellious subordinate. If they won’t do what they’re told, they must be fired. It’s what executives do. Obama has no executive experience, yet wants to be our Chief Executive.
    Not happening.
Sorry about the personnel/personal thing, but it doesn’t change your smear attempt, or make it anything more than what it is. Palin is honest, which is always problematic for lefties.

From early reports, Palin sounds like a very good pick. I still wonder what sort of counterweight she might be, if at all, to McCain on Amnesty.

I wonder also about how she will be able to handle a confrontation with Putin, China, N. Korea or Venezuela, but in all fairness, even W himself was proven to be a real paper tiger. If she is smart, she will pick some shit-hot SME (subject matter experts)

At bottom though, and very refreshing, is what seems to show that for once we have a Conservative. I am cautiously optimistic.

Is there a way I can vote for her and NOT McCain?

  • karl rove

Umm, Robert, very funny. The word is personnel, not “personal”… And you also have to explain her umpteen subsequent denials that she ever pressured Monegan to fire Wooten.

Is there a way I can vote for her and NOT McCain?

When you figure that out, let me know.

I think the more obvious reason for the investigation is that the Alaska Congress, which is republican at the time of the investigation, also pushed for a special counsel. Any chance that the “good ol’boy” network was behind something like this. She did take down one of their main members and came in and started to put the house in order. Probably without genuflecting to the old power network. The “good ol’ boys” where probably foaming at the mouth and could not wait to get something on her.
I expect the Dem’s to take something like this and try to build it into a major problem. The disappointment, and it seems I am always disappointed nowadays, is that the MSM does not cover the story properly.

This doesn’t even deserve a “gate” suffix.

It’s media manipulation as far as I’m concerned. Will somebody explain to me where a well informed person would find flaw in her character for this?

  • http://forums.kikizo.com/ Eddie_the_Hated

Michael Wooten, whom Palin had recommended for the troopers division when she was mayor of the city of Wasilla five years previously.

She didn’t put him in his job, she just gave a recommendation. If I were in a position of authority, and my brother-in-law was looking for a job, I would put in a good word.

It’s called a reference. You don’t even work at a McDonalds without one.

  • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ goon

Good call Whistler, I don’t think its legal to be a cop drunk in their crusier, unless you’re getting a ride from the law.

Another article I read about this had added to the above statement:

    “. . . . tasering his 11-year-old stepson,AT HIS REQUEST, drinking beer. . . . .”

    Yeah, I’d at least request a $25 deposit for the Taser cartridge before granting an 11 year old kid’s request to get Tasered. {/sarcasm mode}

  • robert108

The real “Troopergate” was Bill Clinton using the Arkansas State troopers as pimps; this is just another example of leftie lying to use the same term for Sarah’s moral stance here. Lefties just change definitions to suit their partisan political purposes.

Draft Palin; She Has More Experience Than Obama!

  • Christian Prophet

Wow! Have you noticed Democrats have given up all interest in truth. It has become necessary to smear Sarah Palin no matter what. Reason: she is far more qualified than Barack Obama. See:
    http://christianprophecy.blogspot.com/

  • http://2mdh.blogspot.com/ C. Y.

I was the kind of kid, and still am the kind of guy who would get tasered just for the experience…

Does that make me damaged goods?

    Hated_Eddie,
So knowing what you know now, do you believe you would Taser and 11 year old just because he asked? I would think the trooper has the brains of an 11 year old if he did what he did.

(If I used my Taser on every smart aleck that asked, Taser would be donating stock to my retirement.)

  • http://magyartruth.blogspot.com/ Chief RZ

She can not control another person’s behavior, but she can and did honestly address the problem and then did something appropriate about it. She apparently did not sweep it under the rug or lie about it, or try and cover it up. All these are typical democratic behaviors.

  • karl rove

Wooten deserved to be fired. Palin asked Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan to fire Wooten. Monegan refused, so Palin fired Monegan.

In that case Palin lied to the voters of her state when she denied that the dismissal had anything to do with Wooten: “Former Commissioner Monegan was not released due to any actions or inaction related to personnel issues in his department”. http://www.ktva.com/ci_9929780

Why haven’t we impeached George yet? I am sure we have a strong case against him.

Your BDS is showing. It’s time to up your meds when you start blathering about GWB on an unrelated thread.

Pure hate from a hate-filled leftie. Did you miss any talking points there?

Convicted without a trial I see. Where is the evidence that he is a “drunk”?? If he in fact tasered his kid, what were the circumstances? Was his kid large and threatening him with violence?

How does Rob formulate his judgement? Wikiepedia? The supposed discredited source they don’t accept when we use it against their arguments?

    Hypocrite much?

  • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ goon

I don’t get how you can be a police officer get a DUI/OUI/DWI and still be a cop? How can you operate an patrol car without a liscense. Isn’t having a liscense part of the job discription?

  • ollie-B

I think we ought to convene a Special Prosecutor look into the allegations of misconduct by Ms Palin. Remember Whitewater? Let her get hammered by the Prosecutor and the press to the extent that you can never get anything done.

Say! Why haven’t we impeached George yet? I am sure we have a strong case against him. Better yet, why don’t we withdraw
his pension for the eight years of hell he has put this country through. If he gets a library it would be neat if someone painted a big sign on it saying ‘Gotcha’.

  • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ goon

I wonder what the left is going to do when BHO doesn’t win?
Are they going to say that McCain stole the election? Are they going to try to say that McCain stole Ohio? I can’t wait till November. Heck they will still be blaming Bush into 2011…

  • robert108

“Former Commissioner Monegan was not released due to any actions or inaction related to personnel issues in
    his department”.

It wasn’t personal; she fired an insubordinate employee, as any good executive should have.

What is interesting is how the GOPers have the nerve to try to discredit anyone. Especially with the cast of characters they have in their own party.

These things have a way of playing out. Sarah appears to be a great example and a fine human being. This world was created in wisdom and those who follow it in these sort of situations are often vindicated, just like in the other instances where she was dealing with ethics violations and entrenched corruption. Usually the arrows aimed at the wise will find their mark upon the archer. This ought to be fun to watch.

I predict that they will blame racism; Wright will be spitting more hate, Michelle will no longer be proud of America, and Obama will call for rioting in the streets to force us to install him as President. One big guilt trip.
And, of course, all the other stuff as well.

Unrelenting lying smear of McCain and Palin, including rumors of an affair between them, gay smear of everyone in the administration, a steady campaign of economic propaganda by the MSM. In other words, the usual leftie tactics.

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

What is interesting is how the GOPers have the nerve to try to discredit anyone. Especially with the cast of characters they have in their own party.

Yet when any of ours do wrong, we get rid of them, or at least try. Larry Craig was hounded by GOPers and analysts to retire. That he did not is his failing, not ours. The very nature of politicians is to slowly slide towards corruption. It is not telling that a party HAS corrupt politicians. It’s gonna happen. People are sinful in nature. The telling part is how the party reacts to corruption. The GOP, for the most part, roots it out and gets rid of it. The Dems, time and time again, put the corruption into positions of power, and run it for the Presidency.

Before Robert108 brought the Bill Clinton “Troopergate” thing up, I was going to say they might not want to bring attention to something being called “Troopergate”??? The Dems are so LAME!

Sarah Palin, being a conservative, fights corruption. An inconvenient truth for you partisan propagandists.

    EDIT:

I should add one important piece of information, conveniently omitted in the article. She’s not being investigated because of Troopergate, she’s being investigated because she requested an investigation to be held to show her transparency and legitimacy in the matter…

It’s amazing how these smear stories, on that very rare occasion, turn out amplifying the character of the person they try to tear apart.

First the legislator approved an investigation then Sarah
    decided to investigate herself.

Gov. Sarah Palin is trying to find out what the Legislature’s special investigator might discover as he probes her controversial firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.

Colberg said his office’s review began after state Sen. Hollis French was quoted in The Wall Street Journal about two weeks ago saying the governor could be impeached as a result of the probe. That raised questions about how impartial the Legislature’s investigation was going to be, according to the governor’s office.

Who will rid me of this meddlesome Priest?
