“Paid For By The Polluters” Wasn’t What Obama Was Saying In 2008

Earlier today, in his much-hyped press conference, Obama said that only “the polluters” would be paying for his cap and trade tax.  Here’s exactly what he said:

At a time of great fiscal challenges, this legislation is paid for by the polluters who currently emit the dangerous carbon emissions that contaminate the water we drink and pollute the air we breathe. It also provides assistance to businesses and communities as they make the gradual transition to clean energy technologies.

Unfortunately for Obama, that’s not what he was saying just a year ago when he pointed out (correctly) that cap and trade would make electricity rates “skyrocket”:

“Under my plan of a cap and trade system electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Businesses would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that cost onto consumers.”

This sort of duplicity is what reasonable people describe as “lying.”
