Oslo Norway Crime Wave

Shocking!

There were 10,600 crimes reported in public places in 2007, up from 8,000 a year earlier, writes Norwegian daily newspaper Dagbladet.

Oslo had the highest rate per person in Scandinavia in terms of reported crimes, with 90 reported crimes per 1,000.

Copenhagen had 50 crimes reported per 1,000 and Stockholm had 79.

In New York, there were 22 reported crimes per 1,000 inhabitants.

This means there were four times as many reported crimes per person in Oslo as in New York.

The Oslo police are blaming the increase on an influx of East Europeans, and Minister of Justice Knut Storberget is reportedly partly in agreement.

From an outsiders perspective it seems to me this is what you get when you have a liberal welfare state along with a bad immigration policy.

Not that this kind of thing could happen here.......

In the book While Europe Slept, Bruce Bawer claimed that the crime rate in Sweden was now higher than the crime rate in the United States. Most everyone I’ve mentioned this to refuses to believe it. This article gives me some interesting back up.

I don’t know, it could just be a higher reporting rate over there. I mean if someone stole my lutefisk I doubt I would report it, probably just order from dominoes instead.

Okay, Spartacus. What’s a lutefisk?

It’s cod cured in lye.  It’s a traditional Norwegian dish.

It’s not as good as it sounds.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Socialism works in Norway?  Why don’t you ask the citizens of that country about having to import common items like furniture on the black market to avoid exorbitant taxes.  And about having to wait, in pain, for long periods to get things like knee surgeries.

Yeah.  It works, if you don’t mind living at the lowest common denominator.

How about Norwegian exchange students going home with suitcases of Campbells soup because they can’t afford it there.

You also have to consider that their economy is afloat only because of their oil revenue.

Yep, I see that gun control is really working in Norway. /sarc

Briefly about guns in Norway…

To acquire any firearm in Norway you must obtain a “Permit to Acquire” from the police. This costs N.Kr.125 (ca. GB£12) per application. There is no upper limit on the number of firearms you can apply for. There is no set time on how long the application takes to process, but in my area 10 to 14 days is normal. With the permit in hand the gun can be purchased. The seller countersigns the form and returns it to the police. The gun is registered in the name of the purchaser and a Firearms Permit is issued and sent to the buyer after a few weeks. The original form acts as a temporary permit. The Firearms Permit is valid for the rest of that persons life. The police have a register of local gun owners. The permit must be shown when buying ammunition, and only ammunition in the calibre shown on the permit can be purchased. The permit must also be shown when buying primers and powder (gunpowder).

To be considered for issuance of a permit the applicant must have “valid reason”. Valid reasons include (but are not limited to): Hunting, Vermin Control, Target Shooting, Collecting, Self-Defence. A self-defence permit allows the person to carry a pistol concealed, but these are rarely granted.

That last sentence says it all, don’t you think?
