Only 32% Of Americans Want Guantanamo Bay Closed

This weekend I wrote a post wondering how long it would take for Obama’s campaign promise to close Guantanamo Bay down to come back and haunt him. After all if he doesn’t close it his far-left base, for which Gitmo is something of a casus belli, is going to believe that they aren’t getting their fair share of hope ‘n change. But if he does close it, and if some of the detainees there go on to participate in crimes and/or acts of terrorism (it’s already happened with some of the released detainees), he looks like a fool.
But now it looks like Obama has problems with this particular campaign promise that go beyond the quandary above. As it turns out, only 32% of Ameicans think Gitmo should be closed down.

Nearly half of U.S. voters (49%) say the United States should not close the terrorist prison camp at Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba, but the identical number (49%) also say Barack Obama is Very likely to close it in the first year of his presidency.
Only 32% of voters say the Guantanamo prison camp should be closed, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. One-out-of-five (19%) are undecided.

Paul Ibrahim notes:

So, Obama doesn’t have a mandate on Guantanamo. He doesn’t have a mandate on the Big Three bailout. And he doesn’t have a mandate on offshore drilling or nuclear power.
Only an outspoken minority are on his side on these issues. Yet I suspect that Obama is so blinded by his own ego, and the Democrats have so convinced themselves of having received a mandate, that they will completely disregard the will of the people on these important matters.

Sounds about right to me.

I wonder what the numbers would be if they specifically stated the prisoners would be released in your city. That's what you would call a majpr Obummer.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Just consider the public relations juggernaut that the partisan press did against Gitmo.

Even without that and without anyone (besides Rush and some Bloggers) pointing out the dangers of releasing some of the worst people in the world it's unpopular.

The political situation in the US sucks right now. But it might be fun.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Great point Bill. Maybe they could adapt the sexual offender database thing to released terrorists. You know have neighborhood meetings to let people know about the new terrorist the government moved into your neighborhood.

  • SigFan

Personnaly I think Barry and every one of his cabinet needs to take one of the detainees on as aide. That way we'll know where they are, and the detainees will get a great education in how hope and change will make them and their compatriots love us again. It would really be a great show of trust on the part of Barry and CO. of they made these guys part of their protection details, replete with all the same weaponry given to teh Secret Service heroes that protect them.

  • ellinas

Guantanamo should not be closed. Once the prisoners are moved to other prisons, it should be converted to a tourist attraction with water boarding and all the rest of the amenities offered to the general public.

    Ellinas,

After the crap I went through, being beaten by my ex, waterboarding is a joke. Matter or fact, the longest they ever did it to anyone was for 3 minutes. I can remember being locked in a room and terrorized for 7 hours one time. My ex would hold pillows over my face, thump me in the nose as hard as he could, over and over, and my favorite, dumping cigarette ashes in my eyes. These assholes are possibly murderers. Gee, I wouldn't want them to get a little water up their noses!!!

Sory about your torture by your ex. I hope he gets what's coming to him. But I could not help but notice, that you say "possibly murderers". They propably have gotten a little water up their noses. Time for trial. If found guilty execution seems appropriate. If innocent they should be shown the door.

  • RebTex

I hope obama let's the terrorists out & that he drops them in New York City.
After a few innocent folks get hurt, maybe the bleedin' heart libturds will stop trying to interfere with the defense of America.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

The concept that there's a difference between a domestic criminal and a enemy combatant captured in a foreign battle is apparently too hard for Ellinas.

    Time for trial.

The above is a very childish wish/statement.

I never knew you to be PC. They are prisoners of war. Should be treated as such.

  • RebTex

Maybe to you, but I really want the American left to be exposed to exactly what they want.
THe "I think those on food stamps should get loans for houses even though we know they can't afford them" folks got their way & it only cost America it's financial superiority.
I just hope the same for the "I know they hate non-moslims & want to kill us, but we really hate Bush & think it's all his fault" group of folks.

Maybe there is hope for you.

I don't think you let POW's loose until the war is over.

The Whistler on November 24, 2008 at 06:56 pm

No! You absolutely do not. Someone screwed up big time trying to be cute with euphemisms such as "enemy combatants".
Y'a label the cocksuckers POW's from the start, and keep 'em locked up till the war is over, or they die of old age (whichever comes first). No trials would have been needed. Right now the situation is convoluted and murky.
IMO designation as POW's would have avoided all the bullshit since the inception of Guantanamo Bay.

  • ellinas

RebTex. Very few people on the left, think the way you think they think. (Pheew! that was hard to put together).:)

  • RebTex

    I agree, Elli.
    I actually believe that about 60% are centrist & 20% are leftists & 20% are right-wingers.
As a born Rebel & a sworn defender of my Country, I hate to see those that have volunteered to go do a $hitty job for me & you get slandered or forgotten.
I think every member of Congress that wants to release the terrorists should spend a weekend in the cage with the animals & see if they re-think their complaints.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Well there is a reason for the distinction. They are not actually POW's as that has certain qualifications that at least a large number of these guys don't have.

They amount to wearing uniforms, being part of a legitimate army (such as having a command structure) and a number of other things.

These are by and large guys that you would have summarily executed on the spot during more civilized wars.

  • ellinas

The Whistler on November 24, 2008 at 07:45 pm

Which brings us to today's dillema. But again if government did things right we would be better off today.

Like I said: Y'a label the cocksuckers POW's from the start, and keep ‘em locked up till the war is over, or they die of old age (whichever comes first). No trials would have been needed. You weren't paying attention.

On a serious note, I think you're fooling yourself to think that an incorrect designation would have been better than the correct designation.

  • welder4

When the supreme's gave the prisoner's the same rights as a bank robber that is where the real problems begin. and when we interned the Japanese we saved their hide, for many on the out side was waiting to string them up for attacking our ships and killing our men an women . ok so we gave them 20,000 big deal that one is over with but we had none of these people attack us on our own streets they really deserved better , the detainees should be labeled POW's and let them rot because this war will not end any time soon it could be going on in 60 years or maybe even a 100 years from now . closing Gitmo will be a bad mistake period .

I have been paying attention since day one. The day they brought them to Guantanamo. Let us agree on one thing. We disagree.

  • ellinas

welder4. I am trying to decipher what you are saying but I am unable to. Were there women serving on the ships that were destroyed in Hawaii?

  • ollie-B

when we interned the Japanese we saved their hide, for many on the out side was waiting to string them up for attacking our ships and killing our men an women . ok so we gave them 20,000 big deal

I suppose you mean that we saved the hides of Japanese American citizens who might have been killed by ignorant Americans who would blame them for the attack at Pearl Harbor. That is mighty white of you. I am sure the Japanese Americans should all get down on their knees and kiss our collective asses for destroying their lives and placing them in detention camps. Typical American reaction.
Gitmo should be closed. It has been proven over and over that there is little or no evidence that most of the detainees are terrorists or connected to terrorist groups. Meantime, taxpayers are stuck with paying to house, feed and provide health care for the detainees. Guess how much that is costing us every month. Do you think that makes sense. As for the war on terror, it will never end as long as people see terror as a means to an end. Plain common sense dictates that the closing of Gitmo is in the best interest of the U.S.

  • ellinas

ollie-B. You forgot to mention that the properties (especialy farms) of most detainees were appropriated by super patriots like welder4.
