One Republican Governor Might Just Stand Up And Say No To The Stimulus

And no, it’s not Sarah Palin or Bobby Jindal unfortunately (they’re both going to take the money), but rather Mark Sanford of South Carolina:

The most outspoken critic has been South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who has warned for months of a steep spike in inflation and a severely weakened dollar if Obama’s plan passed. His state is on track to receive $2.1 billion of the stimulus money; Sanford has not yet said whether he would accept it.
“It’s incumbent on me as one of the nation’s governors to speak out against what I believe is ultimately incredibly harmful to the economy, to taxpayers and to the worth of the U.S. dollar,” Sanford said in an interview. “This plan is a huge mistake and is going to prolong and deepen this recession.”…
Associates say Sanford, who recently was elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association, has been disappointed in how few of his GOP colleagues have joined him in speaking out against the size and scope of Obama’s plan.

I hope that Sanford ultimately says no to his state’s share of any “stimulus” spending, because he’s exactly right about the harm that stimulus will do. Oh, sure, it might be a big influx of cash for states with budgets that are in the red, but what problems does it fix? And what new problems does it create?
The “stimulus” won’t fix any problems in these states, because the problem is that these states are spending entirely too much money. Giving them a one-time bailout (at least we should hope it’d be only one time) would only serve to obfuscate the overspending that is the cause of the problem in the first place. If these states don’t have enough money they need to fix their budgets by either raising revenue or lowering spending, not looking to the federal government for a handout.
And the “stimulus” might actually create problems by creating spending projects that would weight on state budgets in the future once the “stimulus” money is gone. Since we don’t want a situation where the federal government is endlessly bailing out state spending, we should say no to this very first “stimulus.” Because one bailout only creates an expectation of more bailouts.
Do the right thing, Governor Sanford. Help lead the GOP out of the wilderness. Say no to the “stimulus.”

He can say whatever he wants. He’ll be waiting with his hands out for the $$.

That would be my Governor. He is an honest man. He has integrity. He personally would not “take” any government welfare. He was one of the few Representatives who lived in his office while there. He only served the three terms he promised.

You see, he does and did what he said he would.

    What would you call that?

crshedd. Are you the shedd from Norwalk?

No. My Governor and my Senator, Mr. DeMint will not. Clyburn is trying to go around and give welfare directly from the federal government to State residents.

He does look like a President and he has some brains.

All of the problems with the states have not been caused by over spending. The federal government has failed to protect the borders allowing a growing class of poor to crop up and the state has to care for them. Add this to the exponentially growing number of green cards and work visas that have put an increasing number of Americans off of the tax roles and onto the unemployment roles. The feds have illegally restricted the use of state land causing industry to be lost in the process. The feds have passed illegal regulations that have been harmful to business. The latest one in the process is one that will prevent any toys from being sold before they go through independent testing. This will put many home crafts people and the companies that supply them out of work an onto welfare and unemployment roles.

States rights have been and are being trampled on and they have no choice but to seek redress on behalf of their citizens under the 1st Amendment.

Quick, someone tell me what giving money to states to cover their excessive spending, which has already been spent, does to stimulate the economy?

  • Buckets

    Mark,

Your a great conversative and a true American. You stand for something….Obama and his Dem’s will continue to spend for the next 4 years. Our grandkids, and their kids cannot afford the debt being left to them…

  • crshedd

come on, we all know that every republican who thinks this stimulus package is going to destroy our country will make sure their state or district gets its ‘fair’ share.

if these republicans had real integrity, from senator to governor to city councilman, they would refuse the money to save the country.

but they will use the 3rd grade excuse, everybody else is doing it.

    why do conservatives hate america?

Shouldn’t be a surprise. Sanford is, by far, the best governor.

I live in SC; Governor Sanford has been remarkable in that he insists the the state live within its means.

He, over the past seven years has been held to constitutional restraints that the state can not over-spend revenues. A good thing; no family could do any less without putting themselves into long-term financial jeopardy.

He recognizes the truth that falling prey to temporary “stimulus” just delays the inevitable when gifts and bonuses’ run their course and you are left to beg for more or just cut the spending.

I don’t think the “begging’ thing in the future will work.

It’s nothing more than putting new debt on an existing or new credit card.

Sanford is also rumored to be considering a run at the White House.

Lets hope so, I think he’s “the guy” for ’12, Jindal and Palin need a lot of seasoning yet; and Sanford is much more conservative than Pawlenty, who tries to play both sides of every issue (has to in liberal MN).

    chief,

nope, i’m from the new hampshire shedds.

  • eneils Bailey

Mr. DeMint will not. Clyburn is trying to go around and give welfare directly from the federal government to State residents.

Demint is a good good guy…Spratt is a tax and spend liberal like Clyburn… Linseed Graham is a John McCain Wannabe…Need another US Senator to replace Graham.. and that will be the best we can do.
