Oliver Willis Lobs A Grenade

These are uneasy times for the left. President Bush has been elected twice and Republicans have had majorities in both Houses of Congress after each of the last six elections. Clearly the contemporary version of liberalism just isn't persuading a lot of Americans.

The left invested a lot in this last election, all of it for naught. Billionaire George Soros alone donated tens of millions of dollars to a number of left-wing causes including Media Matters, the organization lefty blogger Oliver Willis works for. One has to wonder just how much longer Soros will be willing to fund Media Matters given recent failures, which leads me to believe that Oliver is getting a little desperate. He must be looking for a way to support himself once the plug gets pulled from Media Matters, hence the new brand of clothing and this plea for attention:

Episode 2 in America's favorite talk radio show hosted by Oliver Willis.

The topic: Why I Hate The American Taliban. Let the bomb throwing begin.

In case it wasn't clear, by "American Taliban" Willis is referring to those of us on the right side of the political spectrum.

Kinda of sad, isn't it? A person reduced to throwing around inflammatory comments as a means of drawing attention himself, even if it is the negative kind. And why not. P.T. Barnum once said that you could say anything about him you wanted, just be sure to spell his name right.

Next Oliver will be comparing Bush to Hitler. Why? Because that's the sort of thing that grabs people's attention. It doesn't matter if it isn't an even remotely apt comparison, all that matters is that it will piss people off and bring in loads of attention.

So by way of providing Oliver with enough rope to hang himself, I link to his hateful little diatribe in the hope that you will see it and recognize it for what it is: Hateful rhetoric spewed by a bitter and wholly partisan hack.

"Kinda of sad, isn’t it? A person reduced to throwing around inflammatory comments as a means of drawing attention himself, even if it is the negative kind.”

Coulter? Limbaugh? Liddy? Obviously these folks only say thoughtful, respectful things.

What’s sad is that the public has accepted right-wing vitriol as honest debate while the left are labelled hate-mongers.

PS. Soros? HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS? Try approximately $30 million.  Scaife alone is up to approximately $640 to conservative causes over the past 4 decades. Exageration is a powerful rhetorical tool..... and is essentially lying.

Let me get this straight.  Your argument is that because Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh say hateful things its ok for Oliver Willis to say hateful things?  Surely your position isn’t “They started it.”

As for your comments regarding Soros, duly noted and changed.  I was going to source that with a link but forgot in my rush.  My mistake.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

I refuse to link Mr. Willis. It gives him a voice, and I refuse to give him that voice.

Good Point.

However, the answer is yes. Turning the other cheek is not working. Limbaugh has been spreading his brand of slime for almost two decades now. Politely asking him to stop while not slinging some of our own mud has definitely not worked. And Coulter...... well, she takes all this mud to a new level. She’s actually called for “a couple of liberals to be put to death.” I mean.... come on.

My other point is, it smacks of a double standard to slam the left leaners and let the rightwing have a free pass. Not so much you, but the right in general. I know it’s their “job,” but I for one won’t be convinced of anything while I see this going on.

I did listen to it, Oliver, and here’s where I have a problem:

Being against abortion does not make me a “Falwell.” Clearly you are for abortion and classify all who oppose your view as “the Taliban.”

I even found it laughable that you talked about how the Taliban has taken “it to the next level” and killed people, then you go on to say that “we are not for that” in this country even after the election of Bush.

As though electing Bush meant we were taking a step toward killing people who support abortion.

Not everyone who oppose abortion is a televangelist, Oliver.  The fact that you don’t get that is the problem.

Did you listen to what I said? No, of course not. I made it quite clear who my hate is directed towards. Real christians, no problem. Pat Robertson and Falwell? They can go to hell.

"Pat Robertson and Falwell? They can go to hell.”

Though you may disagree with everything they have to say, to curse them with hell is gross. Sure, you could say that to the mass murders like Arafat and Hitler- but to Robertson and Falwell? I’m breathless.

Falwell/Robertson said that we deserved 9/11. They can go to hell. Quote me on that.

Rob, the election is being assumed by some very loud voices that America is ready to welcome theocracy. As I said in my show, not even most religious Republicans believe that. But the loud voices are gaining strength, and they hurt our country.

I’m not aware of those men saying any such thing, but if they did I’ll agree with you.

But my problem isn’t with your criticisms of people like Pat Robertson.  My problem is how you lump people like me in with them.

I’m an atheist, but a staunch anti-abortion person.  But to hear you talk my anti-abortion views lump me in with the “evangelicals” you were going on about.  Then you refer to those “evangelicals” as the “American Taliban,” so I’m lumped in with that as well.

I’m partially convinced that your definition of the “religious right,” or evangelicals as it were, is anyone who disagrees with you on social issues.

Rob, I’m fully convinced that O’Dumber has a preconcieved notion of the nature of Republicans that he cherishes far too much to let go.

He doesn’t understand himself, he doesn’t understand republicans, and as Sun Tzu might say, that lack of understanding doesn’t bode well for his hopes of victory.

’mass murders like Arafat and Hitler’.

Arafat is responsible for the deaths of a lot of people. But please. Can we have some sense of proportion?

Falwell on 9/11, two days after it happened: “God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve”. He goes on to say gays and the ACLU brought the attack on us.

The modern GOP counts on guys like him, and their followers, for a significant part of their constituency. This is a fact.

They do?  Really Oliver, because this Republican isn’t seeing it.  That’s like me saying that the Democrats rely on people like Cameron Diaz who go around screaming about Republicans legalizing rape.

And like I said, my problem isn’t with your words about Robertson or Falwell.  My problem is how you lump moderate people on the right who are socially conservative on a few issues into your “American Taliban” group.

If John Kerry didn’t need the Hollywood elite then what was he doing trotting around the country with the likes of Bruce Springsteen?  Of course Kerry needed these people.

And, from what you’re telling me, I gather that you consider all pro-lifers part of the “hardcore Christian right?” And if that’s true, maybe it shouldn’t be so surprising to you when you are lumped in with Kucinich.

John Kerry didn’t need Cameron Diaz to bring in votes, your analogy would have worked better had you said somehting like labor unions - which are a far cry from the hardcore christian right, without whom Bush would be a 1-termer. It’s not “lumping in” when they’re part of the platform. I’m a moderate Dem, yet the right has never felt any qualms about lumping folks like me in with Dennis Kucinich - who was soundly defeated in our primaries.

Oh god, “Hollywood elite”. Parroting Rush & Co. now? Cameron Diaz is not Bruce Springsteen, but if it takes touring with the boss as a substitute to taking money from Enron, I’m all for it. Better a silly celeb.

And no, I’m saying the hardcore right is almost all pro-life. Read, please, read.

Why don’t you go back and listen to your podcast again.  Its pretty clear that you associate pro-lifers with what you’re calling the “American Taliban.”

And I’m not purposefully parroting Rush Limbaugh, but if he’s right he’s right.  There’s a “Hollywood elite” whether you care to admit it or not.

And your avoidance of subjects you don’t want to talk about is really quite masterful.  You’ve labeled the right-wing political movement in this country “The American Taliban.” You’ve tried to make an excuse by saying you were just talking about the televangelists among us, but listening to your podcast tells a different story.

Where do you get off comparing those of us on the right to the Taliban?
