Oliver Stone Blames Poor Movie Performance On Bush

Sigh…

OLIVER STONE blames the poor reception WORLD TRADE CENTER received in the international press on President GEORGE W BUSH, insisting he has turned the world against the US. The Oscar winner was dismayed when European critics slammed the movie following rescue workers after the 9/11 New York terrorist attacks, because he is proud of the film. He says, “We got nasty reviews everywhere. The highbrow press in England hated it. Germany was the worst, then Spain. Even Russia. “The whole world is politicised by George Bush and Iraq. You really feel it. “Anti-Americanism is rampant so it was a very threatening time to bring this movie out.”

Right. Because it couldn’t just be that the movie sucked.
I should point out that the other major theatrical release dealing with 9/11 last year, United 93, actually grossed more box office receipts internationally than domestically. But then maybe that’s Bush’s fault too.
Who knows.

Could not possibly be that most movies are crappy?

Not a big Stone fan, but I thought the movie was good and, though it pains me to admit it, he’s probably right to some extent. 9/11 wasn’t as big a deal outside the U.S., and (partly thanks to hysteria) is increasingly viewed as our Reichstag fire. Tom Wolfe’s quote about astronomy is as relevant as ever.

Europeans, as a collection of little nations that spent centuries warring amongst themselves, tend to view things a little differently than we do, and tend to view an invasion of another country, no matter how heinous the regime, with a lot more suspicion than we do, and if you think our media tilts left…

Sigh. Violently acquired freedom for other people just isn’t as popular as leaving them in peaceable slavery. Lincoln had that problem too.

Well, has anyone seen both movies? I’m not really interested in watching a lot of people die (no offense), but I’m sure there’s some logical reason for why one did better than the other. Which one came out first? I’d assume that maybe the first one would do better because it’s “new”. I would blame politics for lack of success with a sensitive movie, but it’s obvious that it is not the case here. Also, we need to look at the audience- where was it sold? How was the filming done? Who collaborated? Did either have any well-known actors (and certainly directors)? Etc…

Actually it is the left that has turned the world against the USA.

This hatred is a world wide phenomenom,
that part is true, but it started a long time before President Bush was elected and has abslolutely nothing to do with him.

The left has been at it relentlessly since the 60s.
And by left I mean the left in most Western countries, USA, Canada, England, France, and so on.

No I am not saying there is a vast conspiracy, just an epidemic of insanity that affects the average leftist.

I did not have such a bad opinion of the left a few years ago, but after I saw the reaction of the left to 9/11, I concluded a good deal of them are insane, dangerously insane.

That is very well said. I am sick and tired of this anti-American and anti establishment the left tries to shove this kind of crap down our throats all the time. Maybe Stone will re-think some of his leftist propaganda.

To be honest, the last Stone movie I actually saw in a theater was Platoon. I am not real hot on major media crap. Though, Deadman’s Chest rocks! Dep is Capn’ Jack Sparrow.

Lordy, Lordy, Lordy, the guy (president Bush) must be some kind of an all powerful demigod. He can create terrorist conspiracies out whole cloth, manage hurricanes and keep people from going to the movies. What a guy!!!

“Anti-Americanism is rampant so it was a very threatening time to bring this movie out.”

Finally a liberal admits what us conservatives have know all along. Now if the rest of you libs would wake up you would understand why world opinion doesn’t make for pro-American foreign policy.

Tall, what you say makes sense…but then how do you explain United 93 doing better in international markets than domestically?
