Oh, Please: US News Calls Palin “The Republican Party’s Untethered Evita”

Are you kidding?

This is the best they can do? An article over at US News by one John Aloyisius Farrell is labeling Sarah Palin the Republican’s “Untethered Evita”, a reference to Eva Peron, Argentina’s one time first lady who used, er, whatever she could to get to the top.

And just how does he justify his comparison? Poorly, it turns out:

Here is this unknown from the provinces, with an appealing face and no record, who takes advantage in troubling economic times of a desperate and sensation-addicted media to skip past the usual gatekeepers and rise to national prominence. Because she is beloved by that portion of the citizenry that spends much of its time gnawing on grievances, Palin can turn most criticism around. When they beat up on me, she says, the elites are putting the screws to you.

I’m sure all you good folks in Alaska will be happy to know that the media elites consider you to be lowly provincials. How dare any of you rubes, even your governor, think you’re good enough to run for the White House. Know your place, peasants.

By the way, speaking of an appealing face with no record, how’s Obama doing? Just asking. And just for the record, if there is a comparison to Evita he most certainly comes closer than Palin. He courted the unions to cement his power, as Eva did. He or his minions strong armed opposition as she did. He charmed the press, just as she did. He promised the poor that he would give them everything and crush the elites (while being one himself and glorying in it) as she did. And he started a whirlwind romance with Europe that slowly lost its luster as folks became aware that he just isn’t what they thought he was. Just like Evita.

So, just how is Palin an “untethered Evita”? The resemblance begins and ends with the fact that they’re both female. They share very few qualities otherwise.

And it’s not even original thinking on his part. He’s basically parroting a snarky hit piece over at Conde’ Nast’s Portfolio . And just to play pile on, he also links the recent Vanity Fair piece and gives that magazine credit for getting her “scalp”.

I think the congratulations for all that scalp gathering could very well be premature.

Take a real good look at the methods used by Obama and by Palin in their political careers and then read up on Eva Peron and see who most closely resembles her. Obama is just one short step away from falling on his face and saying, ‘Don’t cry for me, America.”

Don’t worry. We won’t.
