Obama’s Closing Argument: McCain’s Economy Wouldn’t Be Different From Bush’s
That’s not much of a closing argument if you ask me.
“In his speech, Senator Obama will tell voters that after twenty-one months and three debates, Senator McCain still has not been able to tell the American people a single major thing he’d do differently from George Bush when it comes to the economy. Obama will ask Americans to help him change this country, and say that in just one week, they can choose an economy that rewards work and creates new jobs and fuels prosperity from the bottom-up, they can choose to invest in health care for our families and education for our kids and renewable energy for our future, and they can choose hope over fear, unity over division and the promise of change over the power of the status quo.”
I guess I don’t quite understand why we should think the economy under President Bush has been so bad.
Up until January of this year, we had 52 consecutive months of job growth in this country. And while we may or may not hit a recession (two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth) this year, to date we’ve gone over 17 years without a recession. That’s a new national record, breaking an old record of 11 years.
And let’s remember that seven years ago 9/11 happened.
I know that liberals and the media take it as an article of faith that the economy has been horrible these past almost-eight years, and I’m sure Obama will have a lot of sheep nodding their heads as he makes his “closing argument,” but the economy really been that bad? I just don’t think the numbers bear it out.
