Obama’s Economy: Food Stamp Enrollment Up 70% Since 2007
The Congressional Budget Office said Thursday that 45 million people in 2011 received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, a 70% increase from 2007. It said the number of people receiving the benefits, commonly known as food stamps, would continue growing until 2014.
A lot of this is need, but a lot of this is resulting from the expansion of the program too. The 2008 farm bill gave food stamps a new name – the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – and widened eligibility. More people qualified for the program means more people enrolled and on the government dole.
Foodstamps are supposed to be our safety net which keeps people from starving to death. I’m all for that sort of a policy. But I’m not for a safety net that has turned into a hammock.Tags: food stamps
