Obama Wooing Fiscally Conservative “Blue Dog” Democrats?
But…isn’t “fiscally conservative Democrat” something of an oxymoron these days?
It’s interesting to me that, upon getting elected, Obama seems to be moderating his economic stance. He’s backing away from tax hikes, and now he’s “wooing” self-proclaimed “Blue Dog Democrats” (like North Dakota’s own Earl Pomeroy) who lay claim to that “fiscally conservative” label.
It seems as though Obama wants to appear to be the sort of fiscally responsible leader Republicans claimed to be in the past but didn’t live up to (which is why they aren’t in power right now). While that may represent a lesson for Republicans, I think that Obama’s sudden moderation on economic issues is contrived and will be fleeting.
Because a) the Blue Dog Democrats aren’t really fiscally conservative at all (it’s just a ruse they perpetuate to stay elected in red states) and b) once the current economic crisis dies down a bit Obama’s going to go right back to his tax-and-spend ways.
The reality of Barack Obama is rarely anything like the perception of himself Obama likes to create.
