Obama “Welcomes Debate” From GOP By Mocking Their Tax Cut Suggestions, Says Stimulus Is Spending

But don’t worry. It’s not politics as usual because Obama says so.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A fired-up Barack Obama ditched his TelePrompter to rally House Democrats and rip Republican opponents of his recovery package Thursday night – at one point openly mocking the GOP for failing to follow through on promises of bipartisanship.
In what was the most pointedly partisan speech of his young presidency, Obama rejected Republican arguments that massive spending in the $819 billion stimulus bill that passed the House should be replaced by a new round of massive tax cuts.
“I welcome this debate, but we are not going to get relief by turning back to the same policies that for the last eight years doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin,” said President Obama – sounding more like Candidate Obama than at any time since he took the oath of office less than a month ago.
Obama, speaking to about 200 House Democrats at their annual retreat at the Kingsmill Resort and Spa, dismissed Republican attacks against the massive spending in the stimulus.
“What do you think a stimulus is?” Obama asked incredulously. “It’s spending — that’s the whole point! Seriously.”

But as for Obama’s suggestion that stimulus is spending, let me say this: Government spending is burden. Burden we taxpayers have to carry. And further burdening the taxpayers is not, in any way, going to stimulate economic growth.
Think about it this way: How is Obama’s stimulus spending spree going to be paid for? In order to spend $900 billion to create/save 4,000,000 jobs (at a cost of $225,000/job) as Obama suggests, the money must first come from somewhere. Which means we either raise taxes substantially (a bad, bad idea in a time of recession) or we borrow the money. Thus exploding our already out of control national debt. Which will eventually be tax burden anyway because, at some point, we really are going to have to start paying the debt down.
The more we add to it now, the more our children and grand children will have to pay.
So how is that stimulus?
Obama can mug for the camera and make smug comments about how everyone knows that stimulus means spending (watch the video at the link), but just because Obama says it’s true doesn’t mean it is true.
He really does seem to be letting this messiah stuff go to his head.

    To summarize, what got us into this economic mess was us taxpayers “spending” more of our own money thanks to the Bush tax cuts — no mention here of Washington’s spending. Now, what will get us out of this mess is Democrat record deficit spending of future taxpayer money that will double the national debt.

    Notice the thought process? Obama thinks a tax cut is spending that hurt the economy, but gov’t spending that dwarfs tax cuts is spending that helps the economy. Finally, he concludes that all stimulus is spending. So then why aren’t tax cuts stimulus? This is one confused man. What it seems to come down to is Obama deplores you and I spending our own money, and thinks only government can spend it in a manner which stimulates the economy.

    Actually, the budget deficit is projected to go from $400 billion plus in FY 2008 to somewhere between $1.2 and $1.6 trillion in FY 2009. FY 2010 could reach $2.5 to $3 trillion. The question not yet asked or answered by those on the Left so anxious to spend money we don’t have, is where is this money supposed to come from? The left spent the past 6 years carping about deficits, and our debts to China and Japan. But now that they are in power they are oblivious to questions of how they propose to finance their grandiose spending plans… plans which they can’t seem to demonstrate will have any positive effect on economic growth.

    Obama talks about all the jobs his “stimulus” package will create, but the reality is that the only jobs created are government jobs. No one in the private sector who has lost a job in the past year is going to get that job back because Obama spends $1 trillion we don’t have, and quite possibly can’t afford to borrow.

    The purpose of an economic stimulus package is to stimulate the economy. That is, to get people to buy things. You have, witlessly, endorsed supply-side tax cuts as the proper means for re-igniting economic growth, and undercut the Left’s Keynesian hokum about the stimulus effects of massive federal deficit spending.

    Furthermore, it ought to concern us that the Chinese have the money and the will to purchase more American debt, because the 2009 budget deficit seems likely to be three to four times the $400 billion plus it was in 2008. It obviously hasn’t yet occurred to Obama to ask, never mind the economics-illiterati here, but somebody ought to be concerned with where all this money is supposed to come from.

    The govt is unable to stimulate our economy; all it can do is get out of the way, by reducing tax rates, eliminating punitive regulation, and by removing itself from markets, in general. There is no such thing as “govt stimulus”. The govt cannot create value, so it cannot produce economic growth. Only the private sector can do that. By redistributing money from the more productive to the less or non-productive, govt can only impede economic growth.
    Basic economic truth.

    Thanks for the link. Japan’s economic woes in the 1990s were brought on by a deflationary recession led by declining real estate values. Throwing huge Keynesian deficits at the problem not only didn’t cure it, but exacerbated it long-term… much the same as FDR’s misguided, deficit-driven socialism prolonged the Great Depression.

    Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter all tried the same approach. All resulted in increased inflation and higher interest rates. If Obama and Company aren’t sufficiently knowledgeable about basic econ to identify the problem, they can hardly be expected to come up with a workable solution.

    We’d be better off doing nothing.

    It will be up EVERYONE’S ass, and for a very long time. Again DINO just wants some kind of revenge rather than wanting what could be best for the whole country.
    How bad was it for you the last 8 years? Did you advance in your job? Did you get a raise? Did your wonderful life in Portland take a click upwards over the last 8 years? Were you able to continue to feed your drug habit? All questions that DINO won’t answer, and we all know why.

    Tax cuts are one of the rapidest methods for getting money into our hands.

    Stimulus spending that doesn’t kick in for two years, but raises our taxes to pay for it, is just bone headed.

    Obama is throwing away whatever little capital he started out with.

    My income is under $40K/year, household total under $80K, $120K mortgage w/30 year span. Built my career during the time you claim was a disaster for me and I am nowhere near the top 5%, that puts me in the bottom 95%, hence you’re manifestly wrong.

    The policies pre-Reagan were an utter disaster which resulted in the 82 recession and it wasn’t until after that when Reagan’s policies started taking effect, and we ended up with the strongest post-war economy we’d yet had.

    You are in short a moron as usual, and really, I love that. Don’t ever change. Not that you could.

    If you want some advice, and I know you don’t because you’re a moron, but I’ll do my public service anyhow because your perceptions of need are not relevant to a good deed from without…

    You might want to actually start taking responsibility for yourself. The only thing the left teaches with respect to economics is that economies are made by governments instead of people. If you truly had self-respect you’d realize you are all alone at the grocery store deciding which mayo or soup to buy. It’s not up to your political party, it’s up to you. Which soap you buy, what TV you buy, what college you attend, all of it is up to you. Even when choices are limited, they are still yours.

    You set yourself up for failure by looking outside always. You wait for someone else to do for you. Someone else always has to make things happen for you instead of you making them happen for you.

    That’s a long wait for a train that don’t come.

    As everyone can see, DINO will not answer the questions. The last 8 years have probably been the best 8 years DINO has had. Now the bottom will fall out. DINO thinks that everyone will see their taxes go down, and they may, for a little while. But then we’ll all have to pay for the PORK in Obama’s wonderful “SPENDING” bill. The only ones fooled are the little neerdowells like DINO.

    When you ALL have to start paying for this spending bill, and more taxes are taken out of paychecks, and employers have less capital to work with, there will be less money available to be put back into the economy. 6-9 months after this bill is signed, the situation will be much worse than it is now.

    And as we lower taxes, why not lower spending too so that we don’t end up blowing up the national debt?

    Paying more taxes isn’t going to increase your employers work load. It will increase his over head.
