Obama Uses Daughter’s Bad Grade As A “Teachable Moment”

Obama was in Wisconsin talking about education today, and he used a poor test grade from his daughter to illustrate how parents should be more involved in their children’s education.

I disagree with Obama’s politics, obviously, and I think our schools need more local control and less federal involvement. In fact, I think that if we’re going to subsidize education in this country we should move away from public schools to providing vouchers for parents so they can choose a private school of their liking.
All that being said, when Obama says that parents can’t just sit around and expect the teachers to raise the standards for their children’s education he’s not wrong. If you want your kid to get a good education don’t sit back and demand that the government do it for you.
Go out and make sure it happens yourself.

now, if we can get him to think about MORE things this way, we are on a roll!!!!

Lioncourt, where do you get Jewish out of that? Could you be projecting a bit about your own hangups against the Jewish faith?

Folks, we have a pants around the ankles moment here. Like using the word niggardly and someone thinking your talking about race. Just shows how much our education system has failed us…

    atease

  • Lioncourt

How is it that the offspring of two ivy league shysters could get such a bad grade?

Why are you using a defamatory word? Are you bigoted against the Jewish faith?

Where is Rodney to call out Kenny about is bigotry against Jews?

  • KC

“A shyster (pronounced /ˈʃaɪstÉ™r/) is a slang word for someone who acts in a disreputable, unethical, or unscrupulous way, especially in the practice of law and politics…Generally thought to have been adopted into English as the word shicer, which is an Australian English term for an unproductive mine or claim (also recorded as shyster).”

Lioncourt, where do you get Jewish out of that? Could you be projecting a bit about your own hangups against the Jewish faith?

Kevin: Exactly. Law degrees from Harvard are NOTHING compared to Communications degrees from North Idaho College.

  • sayanything-3960

I apologize, I thought it came from Shylock.

  • sayanything-3960

Actually, when using the word shyster for a crooked lawyer the etymology does come from Shylock. It is a racially charged derogatory word for Jews. I rescind my apology. I believe Kenny’s use of Shyster does relate to Shylock and is an insult to Jews.

Let’s see if I understand, Obama’s kids are off limits unless he can score a political point with them.

And the grades of some of the Obama’s off of limits. Like those that hold political office, but he can talk about his kids grades.

  • sayanything-3960

If you would learn to use anything but wikipedia as a resource you would realize that when used to describe a lawyer even the Germans used it to insult Jews and that it comes from the word Shyster, the Jewish moneylender in the Merchant of Venice.

The common use of the word is a slur against Jews whether you like it or not.

How is it that the offspring of two ivy league shysters could get such a bad grade?

  • sayanything-7743

In the world of the left-wing nuts, the Obama kids are off limits unless he can score political points with them; however, it is perfectly okay for David Letterman to joke about the rape of one of the Palin daughters.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Ok, how about the Merriam-Webster dictionary?

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/shyster?jss=0

Is that ok for a source? Or should I just believe you because you googled it quick and saw some guy in a forum say it was from a Shakespeare play?

Just stop making yourself look so dumb. It’s painful.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Actually, you illiterate retard, “shyster” has a German etymology based on “scheissen” or “to defecate.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shyster

The connection to Jews came later as the legal trades are a traditional industry of those of Jewish descent. But the word itself has no anti-semitic connotations.

So why don’t you just apologize again. Or at least go away for a while and quit making yourself look stupid.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Lioncourt was absolutely projecting his own latent anti-semitic feelings onto the situation

  • sayanything-5376

I agree with what Obama is saying here, but usually what he says doesn’t necessarily reflect what he really feels. His policies are all about the government making all the decisions, not the individual. I have no doubt, at some point, he will attempt to force this frame of thought into the public education system. And knowing what a radical he is, it will involve taking education decisions out of individual school boards (parents), and putting the federal government in charge of them.

  • sayanything-1317

And while you’re issuing deserved apologies, how about issuing an apology for talking about Kenny’s anti-semitism when the original comment was from Kevin, and wasn’t anti-semetic.

  • sayanything-4808

Not in common usage. I don’t regard it as an insult in this context. You can re-apologize to everyone for bringing it up.

Vouchers should be provided by towns at a rate which the towns wish to sponsor. They can vote on it. If some towns want no vouchers, or cheap vouchers, because they would rather not be taxed, let their kids be under-educated.

Unfortunately or not we are at a point where citizens have a right to education through 12th grade, if they so choose. Yes, a right.
