Obama The Hypocrite Cranks The Thermostat In The Oval Office

Here’s what Obama had to say about thermostats on the campaign trail:

We can’t drive our SUVs and, you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on, you know, 72 degrees at all times, whether we’re living in the desert or we’re living in the tundra and then just expect every other country is going to say OK, you know, you guys go ahead keep on using 25 percent of the world’s energy, even though you only account for 3 percent of the population, and we’ll be fine. Don’t worry about us. That’s not leadership.

Here’s news of Obama cranking the thermostat in the Oval Office to offset winter chills;

NYT: WASHINGTON — The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.
“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”

So, whither the leadership Mr. Obama? Or are you just another “do as I say not as I do” limousine liberal? One who uses global warming alarmism to justify all sorts of policies that undermine our freedoms and burden our financial lives while simultaneously living a life of lavish energy consumption?
That’s not change we can believe in.

If you actually read the article, the question was how can Obama be wearing a jacket when the weather is colder than usual?

You know, cold….as opposed to the words…warm and hot.

So, Axlerod makes a joke….”Well…he’s from Hawaii” where it is WARM 90 percent of the time..not hot.

So can take off a jacket in 72 degrees? YES. Is that shocking when it is supposed to be freezing outside? YES.

After all, they aren’t OUTSIDE…..they are INSIDE……so why is it a big deal to ask the president why he isn’t wearing a jacket??? Because the weather is colder than usual.

This is really sort of remedial. But if you want to make an issue out of it. Go for it.

I am just here to give another side of the story. The side that doesn’t read too much into it. As Rob does.

    As I said earlier:

He wants those of us paying the bills to drive clown cars and sweat our asses off in the summer.

Democrats are always big on pointing out when Republicans are hypocritical on family values issues. Well Obama and the Democratic Party have spent the last decade foisting the idea that our energy consumption is destroying the planet. So by the Democrat’s own reasoning, turning your thermostat up to 72 is a far, far, far worse action than trying to get a BJ in a restroom.

    Read his words:

“We can’t drive our SUVs and, you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on, you know, 72 degrees at all times, whether we’re living in the desert or we’re living in the tundra”

In Obama’s screwed up little mind (as Mr. Mackey would say) overconsumption of energy is almost the worst possible thing a person can do. In Fact, I think it comes in second to being rich and not wanting to be raped by the IRS.

Oh wait, didn’t a bunch of his well off appointees fail to pay their income taxes?

Well, the argument was made when I tied (albeit tangentially) how respect was shown for the presidency when I said:

Considering two of the men wore jackets, it is reasonable to assume it was 72 degrees and that Axlerod was making a joke and excuse for Obama, who was showing a different style of respect for the presidency.

My comment assumes that the readers understood the people were up in arms over the change in presidential styles, which is only related to a perceived respect.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

    I made that point

That Bush wore a jacket out of respect for the office? Must be on the other thread!

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Obama, who was showing a different style of respect for the presidency.

With a stretch like that, they’ll be calling you H-Gumby before long! Heh.

  • Hannitized

I can tell you the blood thins when you acclimate to the weather there, which I assume is the same as HI, and even at 65 degree people would be in heavy coats and gloves.

And the inverse of that is when you get used to cold winters and freezing cold weather, 72 degrees can feel like a sauna.

My old roomate used to sleep with only a sheet and the windows open in the room in SF when it was 40-50 degrees.

    Sorry for the triple post.

The article is supposed to be about people who are up in arms about the fact that he wasn’t wearing a jacket in the Oval office.

When Axlerod as asked, how can this be with weather being colder than usual, he mad a joke.

    You took it literally.

You blame me for taking it literally, but the truth is that two gentlemen had their jackets on. Every wore a jacket in 80 degree weather?

What was the temperature of the room? Nobody knows.

Considering two of the men wore jackets, it is reasonable to assume it was 72 degrees and that Axlerod was making a joke and excuse for Obama, who was showing a different style of respect for the presidency.

Axlerod probably didn’t think people like Rob would read too much into his joke.

The other side of the story isn’t hypocrisy over the thermostat, it’s a lack of the respect and reverence for the office that had been shown by previous Presidents.

I would rather Bush wore a shirt and did a better job than run us through the muck he did while wearing a suit.

The new President has proven himself corrupt, double faced, and incompetent in his first week on the job, and you just can’t get off Bush.

We’ll be in food lines, waiting for Obama brand rationed bread, and you’ll still be harping on Bush.

Obama could be found beating a hooker to death with a 7 year old he had jusr raped while wearing a polar bear skin coat and leaving an SUV running, and liberals would find a way to excuse the behavior. Yea, but Republicans are just politicizing this…

  • mplsbob

    Hoss,

Why are you guys trying to explain more leftist hypocrisy.

I don’t see hypocrisy, so how can I defend it. I am not buying Rob’s assumptions.

    Kenny,

So, after telling us yesterday that no one, including yourself, was making the argument that the office was in the fifties…you make the argument that the office was in it’s fifties.

I gave a range, I didn’t specify any particular temperature. It could easily be that the WH is set to cool to 65 degrees for all I know?

That was indeed Axelrods point. And you’re being dishonest by parroting all the foolish arguments we debunked yesterday.

I don’t think it was. I think Axelrod made a boneheaded joke (read: excuse) for his fear people thought Obama was disrespecting the White House.

    Wing,

It’s the Oval Office, not the Starbucks across the street. It’s supposed to be formal. It shows disrespect to be in the oval office without a coat and tie.

Says who? At one time you were supposed to wear white wigs too.

In some businesses you are supposed to wear a suit and tie, particularly if you work with the Military in the East Coast. If you work with the Military here in Oahau or PACRIM you would be looked at strangely.

I worked for UUNET that was a wholly owned subsidiary of WorldCom. At UUNET we dressed casual, at WorldCom they dressed like monkeys.

    Times are a changin.

Rob, you don’t know much about Orchids..

So Obama can keep his home at 72 degrees when he wants. Just not anybody else.

    That’s…fair. I guess.

They have to have a cool down period at night between 50-65 degrees. So he can’t run his house at 72 degrees all night and grow Orchids.

I know, I used to grow them. Here is a pic of my little Moroccan geckos chillin on my terrarium in my back yard in it an orchid that eventually died because it was too hot.

    Here is a baby I was raising…

    To an adult…

Obama doesn’t have the same fat Bush had to insulate him. Wing Chun.

Now Bush is fat. You guys are pathetic. He was the most in-shape president we’ve ever had, he’d dust little smoky Obamas ass and Bush has 20 years on him.

Why are you guys trying to explain more leftist hypocrisy. See, it’s okay that the leftist ruling class hands down orders that says you do one thing when they do another. That’s the way they always roll, but the sad thing is their Koll-Aid comrades will defend every hypocrisy. And, so much for that “Chicago toughness” bullshit he was rolling out when the girls school got closed. I guess that makes him a pussy.

I remember reading accounts of Soviet officials who were summoned to Joseph Stalins office. In addition to being dressed down by one of history’s great mass murderers, they were subjected to additional stress by Stalin’s habit of keeping his office stifling hot.

Stalin like to crank up the thermostat.

Obama likes to crank up the thermostat.

There is no evidence of him being a hypocrite. C’mon now.

  • Hannitized

    We covered this already Rob.

The temperature for growing orchids is between 65-80 degrees at night and cooling down to 50-65 during the night.

Growing orchids generally require the same temperature range as houseplants. Daytime highs in the 70′s and nighttime lows of 55-65ºF will keep orchids and houseplants growing happily. Warm growing orchids should have a day temperature of 72-80°F with sun and nighttime low temperature down to 65°F. Day temperatures for intermediate growing orchids should range from 68-70°F with sun, and night temperatures should be around 60°F. Cool growing orchids require a day temperature of 65-70°F with sun, and night temperature of 50-55°F.

So Obama can run his house at 72 degrees and grow orchids.

Unless you know what the temperature is that he keeps his home, you are just making stuff up.

  • Bat One

There is no evidence of him being a hypocrite. C’mon now.

You’re being just a bit too sensitive and defensive here. Any leader who urges others to make sacrifices that he himself is unwilling to make is a hypocrite. Its kinda like AlGore whining about global warming and carbon footprints while riding around in a private jet and assorted Escalades and living in mansion with a $10,000 per month power bill. If you’re gonna be a Baptist preacher, you’d best not get caught getting drunk and frisky with the church secretary.

In fact, not only did I make that point, but I argued that Axlerod was making excuses for Obama because of people, like you, who actually think it matters.

So Axlerod deflects the criticism, from people like you, by making a joke about the fact that he is from Hawaii, as opposed to disrespectful.

There is no temperature given, two men have jackets. There is no reason to take the joke seriously. Other than for the sake of making partisan arguments out of bitterness.

The point, moron, is not whether or not Obama can literally grow orchids in his office. The point is that Obama clearly feels free to set his thermostat wherever he wants it.

The point wasn’t Axelrod’s poor attempt at defusing the suddenlt revealed hypocrisy of Obama with a glib remark about orchids. (David Axelrod is a long-time Chicago Machine political fixer who is admittedly clever but probably doesn’t know shit about orchids.)

The point was the hypocrisy of asking others, the public, to make sacrifices in their comfort which the One is unwilling to make himself.

  • Hannitized

Just admit Obama is a hypocrite for telling everyone in the U.S. we must conserve while he wastes.

If you can prove the thermostat in the White House is running over 72 degrees, or at 72 degrees all the time, I will.

But just because you confuse a change in culture with something more does not mean I need to subscribe to your point of view.

I like mine just fine thanks.

I worked for UUNET, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of WorldCom. Now the WorlCom guys wore suits, we wore kakis and polos. Hell, sometimes we wore jeans.

The WorldCom guys were less talented and had to rely on us to help them sell. WorldCom was also corrupt, while UUNET was not.

Hannitized, if you think that Axelrod meant that the temperature was literally appropriate for growing orchids you’re a fool. I doubt that Axelrod even knows at what temperature orchids can be grown at.

His point is that Obama keeps his office noticeably warm, because the President likes it warm.

Normally, I wouldn’t have a problem with that, but when it’s coming from the same guy who is saying I can’t set my thermostat where I want it…well…I’m going to call him a hypocrite.

And I’m going to be right, despite your rather tortured and childish attempts at a defense.
