Obama Sets Record With June Fund Raising?

After a long delay that had many commentators (including myself) questioning the campaign’s fund raising the Obama campaign finally released its June fund raising figures and is claiming a $52 million haul for that month.

In an e-mail to supporters, campaign manager David Plouffe said the Obama campaign raised the funds with an average donation of $68. The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee have a combined total of $72 million in the bank, Plouffe said.

“But more impressive than the number is how you did it,” Plouffe wrote. “Hundreds of thousands of ordinary people contributed to building our campaign for change. Many were first-time donors, giving only what they could afford—and the average donation was just $68.”

Personally?  I’m not buying it.  If Obama’s fund raising was a new record for the campaign why did the campaign sit on these numbers for weeks before they released them?  This just isn’t passing the smell test.

I think it’s probably because they’ve been busy using July fund raising to inflate June’s total.  They tried to keep the totals a secret, but with McCain crowing about his totals they couldn’t do that for long.  So they sat on the numbers until they could get some more cash in to inflate their totals.

Obama supporters will see such an idea as heresy, but then Obama supporters believe everything that comes from the messiah’s mouth.

But even if Obama did set a true-blue record with his June fund raising his campaign is in trouble financially as revenue is just one side of this equation.  Obama is still running one of the most bloated campaigns in history.  In order to avoid running out of cash by the end of the campaign Obama will have to fund raise like this every single month.

Even if the campaign isn’t cooking fund raising numbers the odds of doing that are unlikely.

And then there’s this:

When Obama’s cash reserves are combined with the DNC’s, the party has about $92 million to spend right now—a few million less than John McCain and the RNC.

As usual, another Obama pronouncement turns out to sound pretty but not really mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.
