Obama Set To Charge Already Beleagured Taxpayers $50 Million For Inauguration Bash

Bailing out banks. Bailing out car companies. Now taxpayers are staring down the barrel of an “economic stimulus” spending spree that will represent 5% of our GDP (as compared to the 3.2% military spending represents) and Obama wants taxpayers to kick in $50 million for his inauguration bash.

“Even though we’re very practiced at inaugurations and large events, this is one that will rewrite the book on inaugurations,” said Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-Washington, D.C., who has requested an additional $15 million from Congress to help the city cover costs. That would double the $15 million Congress has already allocated to pay for all national events and demonstrations in Washington during 2009.
Mayor Adrian Fenty agreed that costs for increased security and crowd control would dwarf the original allocation. And for a city facing a budget shortfall and the same economic downturn affecting the rest of the country, now is not the time to rack up debt, Fenty told CNN. Watch more on the inauguration cost »
“We are in talks with the federal government as we sit here today to let them know — I think they already know that that’s not enough,” he said, referring to the initial $15 million allocation. “Now the question is if you want to make sure that you cross every ‘t’ and dot every ‘i,’ it does look like it’s going to be significantly more than that.”
Fenty predicted costs for the city would near $50 million.

Remember in 2004 when the media was all over Bush for having big inauguration celebrations while the country was in the midst of the war in Iraq?
Well given that we’re in the beginning of a recession, and hundreds of thousands of people are losing their jobs, and taxpayers are already being asked to spend what will undoubtedly amount to trillions of dollars on bailouts, why isn’t Obama being hammered for his lavish inauguration ceremonies and what they’re going to cost the taxpayers?

Yes, it should be held at the local Motel 6 with punch and cookies. We must live like paupers because the republicans spent all the money on their friends and wars.

I hope he spends $100 million on his inauguration.

Where were you when bush was spending a trillion on a war based on nonexistent WMDs?

    —–

Of course dems voted for spending bills. They had to. Did you expect them to shut down the government like republicans did in the 90s? Straw man argument. The agenda and the priorities were set by REPUBLICANS since they ran all three branches of the government that decide what gets spent and how much.

You people seem to forget who won all those elections in the 90s now that things have gone to hell. Don’t you remember all that crowing republicans did about how they controlled everything and were going to do such a great job they’d rule for a century?

Isn’t it funny how that turned out?

It’s not just Obama abusing the taxpayers by 50 million being spent on his inaugural. Many other things go on besides this. For example, in the past few weeks I pulled an article off of http://www.cnn.com by Campbell Brown. She described how it was common for politicians to spend anywere between 7500 and 50000 dollars on a painted portrait of themselves to hang in the whitehouse, pentagon etc. Apparently Rumsfields painted portrait of his ugly mug came to a whoping 50000 dollars. Talk about government waste, fraud, and abuse. Why couldn’t they just take a 5 dollar picture and hang it up like the military does? Why couldn’t Obama and all of the other presidents before him just be sworn in on the whitehouse steps and go to work? He’s not royalty but a hired public servant of the american people as are the other politicians. If someone made it their full time job to follow these politicians around and make it known to the american people just what kinds of things that they waste our taxpayers money on the american people might just wake up and decide to be a little bit outraged and start to demand more accountability from these politicians.

Maybe if they were a little more conscious of their spending over the past 8 years we wouldn’t be in such a financial crisis!

Show me a spending bill passed anytime in the last 8 years that a majority of democrat liberals did not vote for.

Comparing your post to Dino’s (and all your other despicable remarks in previous posts) you are the most childish person on this site, no one is even close to your immature rants.

WTF are you talking about? have you seen DINO’s posts?
    idiot!

My last comment to you. Peace.

What do you know about Peace?

Amen to that. Although I voted and campaigned for Obama, I am not happy with his or his predecessors wasteful spending on these extravagant balls.

Another hall of shame post by likwidshoe:

Davinski – I wonder what my reaction to him would be if all of my family was killed in this worthless war?

likwidshoe: Saddam and his two sons would agree with you, if they were still alive.

What’s it like to be a terrorist and Saddam supporter? Just curious.

I would also bet that spending went up the last two years as well.

The left can’t respond to these points in a mature way. They can only insult.

    They’re children.

Just look at the first response to this post by the child in this thread.

$50 million would buy a lot of hope for the poor who voted for Obama.

Davinski – When you send people off to an immoral war, what do you get?

Why don’t you go ask your ally Saddam?

    Oh, yeah…

Your words speak for you. Have you no shame? I am here to debate, and if I disagree with you, this is your argument?
My last comment to you. Peace. Think about your remarks. Why don’t you try to contribute something worthwhile.

This is for security for the city. I don’t see how that’s an inappropriate expense.

Look at what penny-pinchers the conservatives become now that they don’t hold the purse strings!

Maybe if they were a little more conscious of their spending over the past 8 years we wouldn’t be in such a financial crisis!

PS. $50 million dollars was spent in Iraq in the time it took you to read my post.

Rob, I think there’s a little liberal hiding inside you. I really do. You’re not like the other kids here.

    Good blog, too.

Really? Can you link to one of my “rants”? I don’t usually write those things out as I tend towards the Fisking style at these blogs. I’d like to see the rant, or at least what you consider one of my rants. Does this comment count?

    Thanks.

But hey, at least I’m “obscenely honest”. That’s something. Davinski, I can’t say the same for you and never could. I find you to be a dishonest little shit.

And you know I’m being honest.

    Cheerio!

Oh look Martha! The brainstems are preaching frugality now that they’re out of power! All those years of worshipping the wealthy and approval of gazillion dollar CEO pay have come to an end!

Keep up the good work, brainstems! Maybe Obama will govern from the local Marriot and take vacations to Atlantic City!

    Idiots.

I wouldn’t fret, let them party like there is no tomorrow because when tomorrow comes the children are about to awaken from their slumber party with one heck of a hangover.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 DINO

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! There’s a conservative here expressing concern for the plight of the poor.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you feel that tug at your heart before or after you tried blaming the poor for all of our problems including the latest republican Depression?

That TRILLION DOLLARS the shoe-target spent on Iraq would have bought a lot more than hope. And that’s just ONE of the stupid things republicans wasted money in the past decade.

    Now I’ll leave you alone to cry those big old tears for the downtrodden. {sniff, sniff}

  • Mickey

All of the executives and the board of directors at the company I work for took a “NO PAY” option for themselves for 2009 because of the economic situation. Obama could learn something about leadership from these people.

I hear he is staying at a posh $30 million dollar Hawaian estate for the holidays…

ahh let the little people eat cake.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

It’s 50,000,000 for security for an unnecessary party. At a time when Americans are already footing the bill for bailouts, and what will be a shameful about of “economic stimulus” spending under Obama.

I don’t have a problem with security. What I question is Obama asking taxpayers to foot the bill for the security at his party.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Dino, I haven’t been happy with Republican spending either.

And I’ve criticized Republicans for it, because unlike you I’m not some dishonest hack.
