Obama Says He Wouldn’t Rush Out Of Iraq
First genocide in Iraq is no big deal, now rushing out of Iraq would be “irresponsible.”
Which is it, Senator?
SUNAPEE, N.H. – Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Thursday the United States cannot use its military to solve humanitarian problems and that preventing a potential genocide in Iraq isn’t a good enough reason to keep U.S. forces there.
“Well, look, if that’s the criteria by which we are making decisions on the deployment of U.S. forces, then by that argument you would have 300,000 troops in the Congo right now — where millions have been slaughtered as a consequence of ethnic strife — which we haven’t done,” Obama said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Obama has said that the potential genocide of Iraqis isn’t a good enough reason to leave our troops in Iraq. Obama has also called the invasion a mistake, and decided that the war is lost by backing legislation for troop withdrawal.
So, given all those positions, why wouldn’t Senator Obama want to get our troops out of Iraq as soon as possible? If the mission in Iraq was a mistake, and if that mission truly is lost, and if saving the Iraqis from genocide isn’t worth the lives of our troops, then why let one more soldier die for a war we have no intention of winning? At least from Obama’s perspective, anyway?
Seems like a crass and calculated political position to me.
