Obama Says He Will Raise Taxes On People Making $41,500 Yearly, Not $32,000 Like McCain Says

Because that’s a big difference, right?

The Obama campaign has just released a new ad accusing John McCain of “makin’ stuff up” about Obama’s record on taxes.  It’s a response to a McCain ad that claims Obama “promises to cut taxes, but he voted to raise taxes on folks earning as little as $32,000.”  The Obama ad cites FactCheck.org saying of McCain’s charge, “It’s not true.”

The FactCheck.org analysis, which seems to be correct, says that in fact Obama voted to raise the taxes on folks earning as little as $41,500 a year.  If that is the case, why couldn’t McCain have said that?

The laughable thing here is not so much that McCain was wrong, but that Obama is trying to draw a distinction between giving Americans making $41,500/year a tax hike and giving Americans who make $32,000/year a tax hike.

Neither demographic, I’m sure, would enjoy having their taxes hiked.  Nor are they likely to be in a position to weather such a tax hike well given the tax burden they are already carrying.

Obama may have caught McCain in a fib here, but McCain still wins the day as Obama still ends up looking like a tax-and-spend liberal who wants to raise taxes not just on the rich but also middle class Americans making $41,500/year.
