Obama Pushing For New Appliance Efficiency Standards

Because it’s the President’s job to regulate how your dishwasher operates.

President Obama today announced that he is pressuring the Department of Energy (DoE) to speed up some long-delayed efficiency standards for appliances. His move is being applauded by environmentalists—no surprise there. And DoE itself will almost certainly proclaim that the new standards will give us better appliances in the future; they might cost more, but they’ll supposedly save us money in the long run.

What’s infuriating is that we don’t really need these efficiency standards. If an efficient appliance is a good idea that will do what citizens want it to do by saving them money on energy costs, then there is no need for the government to mandate it.
These policies are a pure manifestation of government meddling for meddling’s sake. Some people just aren’t happy unless they’re telling their fellow citizens how to live every single aspect of their lives.

When is this control sh#t going to stop???

When people wake up to the fact that the loss in our personal freedom is too high a price to pay for the warm fuzzies of having elected America’s first black president.

    What?

Did you nutters just get a new shipment of panties?

    Thanks for the morning laugh.

Can someone explain the real definition of: “REALITY”.

  • gilbyguy

Oh .. Goody … now my dishwasher will work as god as my low volume toilet!

    Grrrrr…

  • jimmypop

its like hybrid cars…. these things never make financial sense. even at $4 per gallon. you get your money back by the time the cars useful life has past.

Good one Tom, That Nobama is a mastermind! Just wait until he starts telling toliet paper manufacturers that the paper has to be more environmentally friendly. It will dissolve into bio-friendly muck in your hand just as you are using it. Send him back to his play pen, he doesn’t have a clue what he is doing, well unless communism is the way this country wants to end up as. Question: How can you tell when Obama is lying? When his lips are moving.

I don’t need that jerk telling me what i’m going to buy. I have 2 dish washers that work just fine. they are 10 & 15 yrs. old. A little slow but they get the job done!!

Whats next, theee miss-i-ahh will pass a law that says each person will not crap more than once a day. You can only flush once a day. When is this control sh#t going to stop???

    Please don’t tell me in 1444 days, 03 hrs. 44 minutes….

  • tom

C’mon guys he’s trying to help the economy. People will start buying new appliances now before the government mandated replacements becuz the replacements will be more costly.

My specialty is geology not engineering, but if everyone replaced all their energy inefficient appliances, wouldn’t the manufacture and transport of those appliances use more energy than would be saved?

Wouldn’t suddenly getting rid of our old appliances put a strain on our recycling centers, and cause overuse of our landfills?

  • sarahw42

I disagree with the idea of regulations that enforce efficiencies on companies for the reasons everyone has already stated.

A more acceptable solution would be to provide incentives for companies who choose to improve their products’ efficiency, but not a regulated requirement.

:gilbyguy : you an I share the disdain for the low volume toilets , we have to flush them two and three times to get it clear, the only thing low volume is good for is urinals /… of Course one might say I am just full of it ,

Ironic. The new LCD and Plasma televisions use three times more energy than conventional tube televisions. Good thing we are moving to HD digital TV.

    Heh.

The thing about hybrid cars that everyone forgets is disposal of the batteries. If everyone switched to a hybrid car, the additional lead and crap that would leak into our water would turn America into a nation of disfigured, brain damaged mutants in a couple generations.

How about we put a tax on ‘motor mouth jive talk’, which seems to be Obama’s greatest quality.

Hey and knock it off with the dishwasher criticism, I already have one of those fix and repair daily dish washers. How many times can one appliance flood the room before you throw it out the window. I am real close to finding out.

Actually, jim, the cost (I have a Prius) is about the same as any mid-size car and so far it’s been maintenance free (had it for 3 years). That being said, I only got it because I wanted to experience a electric (weil half electric) run auto. Still it is nice to fill up the tank for about 1/2 the cost of conventional vehicles.

Nobody from the left showed up to give an argument. We only got “hope ‘n change” snark.

  • docdave

Efficient bureaucrat – sounds like a oxymoron to me.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

I just bought a new refrigerator last month. I looked at the efficiencies, but that wasn’t my primary reason for choosing one model over another.
Obama should try to keep Iran from nuking Israel and leave the appliance shopping to Michelle.

  • Harry

How about demanding efficiency out you bureaucrats?

Consequences and eventualities are not in the enviro-nut vocabulary. When saving snail-darters or spotted owls by manipulating the ecostructure (which, by the way, includes their brand of “preserving” those ecostructures), all other life forms are forfeit. They do not consider collateral obliteration of species or envronments, only their tunnel-vision goals. But, of course, their intentions are really really good…

The best example would be the worst wildfires in human history recently, attributable 100% to the lack of management of forested areas, which the ecoNazis orchestrated.

Wing Chun, you are correct. The environment will suffer via dogooders, then we’ll have a bigger mess to clean up. Best let the market dictate, but hey, we’re beyond that now…

  • http://dougeefargo.blogspot.com/ dougee

If people want appliances to be more efficient the market will push that way. Obama should leave the engineering to those with the degrees (I’ll have mine in 10 months!!!)

Saving energy is the same as having a good investment. Whether energy saving around the home or to industries, not just energy is saved but also reserves some money for other important matters or even for rainy days. Practically, using less electricity but effectively delivering good function of modern appliances will be wiser.  North Vancouver Appliance Repair
