Obama Pretty Much Admits To Having Told Iraqis To Delay Agreement For Troop Withdrawals

Now that the McCain campaign has picked up the charge that Obama asked Iraqis to delay a deal with the Bush administration for troop withdrawals until after the election the Obama campaign has decided to hit back. I think they’re trying to deny the claim, but by my reading it seems like they’re pretty much confirming it.

PUEBLO, Colorado (AFP) — Barack Obama’s White House campaign angrily denied Monday a report that he had secretly urged the Iraqis to postpone a deal to withdraw US troops until after November’s election. . . .
…Obama’s national security spokeswoman Wendy Morigi said Taheri’s article bore “as much resemblance to the truth as a McCain campaign commercial.”
In fact, Obama had told the Iraqis that they should not rush through a “Strategic Framework Agreement” governing the future of US forces until after President George W. Bush leaves office, she said.

So McCain is lying about Obama telling Iraqis to delay the agreement until after the election, because what Obama really did was just tell them not to rush through it until after the election.
If you know the difference between those two things I’d like it explained to me.

Come on sparkie you know that surrendering has been NOBAMA key issue, now that the war is going well he is trying to muck up the water by delaying troop movements.

Actually this could be a violation of the logan act…

    sparkless-arse-fuckin-buckle,

Republicans would far rather lose an election than lose a war. Your mileage obviously varies considerably.

It’ll be interesting to see if this is a “real news” story on the 3 used to be major networks. Will anyone look into this? Probably not, they are too busy checking to see if Sara Palin returned all of her library books on time during college or if her husband uses ethanol in his snowmobile.

Good news though, America is not falling for it.

And what about the troops out now part of his promise, puff?

This piece summarises the issue very well I thought. The quick version is that there’s a difference between the long term Strategic Framework Agreement and any troop draw downs that occur as conditions warrant. A sloppy story from Taheri who is well known for his sloppy stories.

Both sides have used the Iraq war as a political issue, because it is a political issue. If the war goes badly it’s good for those who opposed it. If it goes well, it’s good for those who supported it.

And that’s all well and good. It’s how our system works. But there’s a difference between that and trying to manipulate progress in the war for your personal political gain.

If we’re going to fight a war we should do our best to win it, no?

This stuff isn’t rocket science. I shouldn’t have to explain it to you.

Sparkie, I think we’ve won a relative peace in Iraq by defeating foreign agitators who were fighting to keep Iraq in chaos until we leave. We did it through a shift in tactics and a change of leadership with Petraeus.

Soon the Iraqi government will take over the entire country and our troops can come home.

It’s as simple as that, though I’m sure your conspiracy-addled mind doesn’t see it that way. Which is why it’s a good thing nobody cares what you think.

Anyone who thinks the Iraq war has been productive is ignoring Iran’s lack of influence in the greater ME before the war began. They are ignoring the simple fact that Iraq is going to be a terrorist recruiting hotbed for the next 30+ years. When you consider individual variables in isolation, it always can be seen ‘like this’ or ‘like that’.

But there’s a difference between that and trying to manipulate progress in the war for your personal political gain.

Do you mean like segregating Iraq, as we have done, so that we get a lull around election time and then all hell breaks loose once we leave?

    Manipulation like that?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/sparkiearbuckle sayanything-81

You guys don’t use the war for political reasons?

    Bullshit.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/sparkiearbuckle sayanything-81

Well, maybe we should bookmark this and look back on it in a year – to see who’s full of political stumping bullshit and who’s not. The guy who is replacing Petraeus doesn’t agree with you about the potential for long term stability, but I’m sure you know more about the situation in Iraq than the guy who they have now placed in charge of the whole operation. (/sarcasm)

Do you think that mccain, the non conservative, will really follow through on the conservative’s biddings?

Reply to my comment. Are you actually convinced we are looking at even a potentially stable situation here or are you just blowing smoke? Do you read up on how we have secured this lull, i.e. segregation? How do you feel about our methods? Strikes me that now we are not trying to ‘win’, we are trying to find the right big fat bandaid so that we can pull out. That bandaid is being hailed as a victory by both parties (at times) but 5 years down the road, some perspective will probably change our opinions about what we are seeing now.

Wait, I thought you guys were pro-Iraq War?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

We’re in favor of winning the war, not postponing progress for political reasons.
