Obama Planning On Nationalizing The Public Transportation System

I wasn’t aware that we have a problem with the various local transportation system that needed to be solved by federal take over. Has there been some crisis of unsafe buses, trains and subways that I wasn’t aware of? I know there have been crashes, in particular the tragic Metro crash in DC itself, but that hardly makes a trend. And this sounds suspiciously like Obama once again using a “crisis” to expand his power.
Regardless, this line from the Washington Post article about the development ought to send a chill down your spine:

Under the proposal, the U.S. Department of Transportation would do for transit what it does for airlines and Amtrak: set and enforce federal regulations to ensure that millions of passengers get to their destinations safely.

Anyone familiar with the financial disaster that is Amtrak, or the endless ridiculous hijinks going on at the TSA, should flee any attempt by the federal government to manage our subways and light rail lines.
Outside of heavily urban areas, I think most public transportation systems are a waste of time. I know here in North Dakota they’re mostly a rarely-used drain on public funds. In Grand Forks, for instance, total government subsidy for the bus system amounts to $5,000 per rider per year. Meaning that the bus system in Grand Forks isn’t something that needs more federal management.
It’s something that just needs to go away.
Again, I think this is less about safety than about yet another government power grab.

The way to pressure unions is the way Reagan did with the Air Traffic Controllers – De-certify their communist organizations. There are a lot of unemployed people looking for work – let’s get people working that want a job.

This must be why liberal Wisconsin Governor Doyle Bought two train locomotives and cars from Europe for $45 million dollars with no rail/tracks to run them on. It’s part of the lib master plan.

I think he just wants to be able to say he made the trains run on time!

  • sayanything-9974

You support it because civilized countries all have it – Brilliant arguement. We should be just like the europeans and all the civilized countries. If we become like them who will come to OUR defense when needed. They wouldn’t even have countries if it wasn’t for the USA. Pretty stupid (not surprising) reply to why we should do something. You seem to just be along for the ride – so enjoy it, Comrade. Drink lots of Koolaid.

Ah, poor widdle sanni! Don’t even know what AMTRAK is. Now, screech and cry for us some more, that is some funny sh*t right there, methhead.

  • jimmypop

he needs to try this with the railroads….. watch the fur fly!!!

  • sayanything-9974

Not aware of any crisis – There was no crisis until Obama made it one with his pronoucement about government intervention. Wish he would just take a break from saving us from all the crisis he creates.

Nationalizing public transportation wont make the riding experience any better. Honestly sparks, that was a stupid comment. Even Amtrack can’t make it without being subsidized. I agree we should have a “quality” national rail system but we dont. Handing over to the assclown democrats wont make it better. Just look at how they screwed up Fanny and Freddy, the CRA, the DOT, Medicare and Medicade. Forget it sparks, government can’t run a koolaid stand w/o making it worse.

    In the ditch again!

am undecided if “nationalizing” would help how poorly and incompetently Fargo’s bus service is run. It doesn’t begin to address employment and shopping needs–is over 10 years behind in this. The idiots in the Fargo MAT office couldn’t qualify as walmart greeters. Everything–time, money, effort, attention is wasted on NDSU–who freeloads off the bus now for 8 years and has more and more frequent service than the regular routes–plus the 5 brand new buses from the stimulus package that were SUPPOSED to replace 5 older MAT buses. Plus, NDSU has heated shelters–paid for with tax dollars–that fixed routes don’t have either. Something is dead wrong here with Fargo’s bus service. As for helping Amtrak–I don’t know if “nationalization” would help there–could use another trip going east and west instead of just that 230 am trip…….

Let the liberals spend and build it. Let the Cons rot, take dirt roads and find their own way to the unemployment line.

  • sayanything-2

So, when other people are using meth and committing suicide everyone should do it? You are an idiot.

  • koklay

why does the mere possibility of becoming civilized make you want to ask “who will come to our defense when needed”? you mean we are more likely to get allies coming to our defense if we’re not civilized??!! “pretty stupid reply” is what you should tell yourself, buddy

  • sayanything-2

All rail transportation is governed by Federal Regulation. How well is that working?

  • sayanything-4808

When the local union bosses realize that they will no longer have influence over the system locally and have to work as peons under the national leadership, they won’t like it. Maybe the Dems should reconsider this before the union “encourages” them to.

  • sayanything-81

I support public transit. Civilized countries all have it. Join the club and drop the clubs, assclowns.

  • sayanything-81

There are ways to pressure the unions. NYC put the managment on trial for contempt, threw them in jail, and ordered the transit unions back to work. It can be done, but Philly is to corrupt to pull something like that off. Our transit strikes drag on as a result.

  • bikebubba

A mark of civilization is public transit? So then there was no such thing as civilization until about 1900?

Anyone who has EVER ridden Amtrak ought to be against this one…..
