Obama Padding His Fund Raising Numbers?
When Obama was sitting on his June fund raising numbers I speculated that it was because those numbers were lower than expected just his fund raising for April and May. When he announced that his June fund raising was actually around $52 million I expressed doubt, saying that I thought Obama was probably shuffling July donations into June to prop up those numbers.
Now comes news that Obama’s fund raising over the course of June was actually just $27 million when you don’t add in the last day of the month where Obama claims to have raised $25 million.
That seems more than a little hinky, especially when you consider just how badly Obama needed his June fund raising to be huge.
McCain is taking public financing, and when his fund raising is combined with the RNC he has an advantage over Obama even if we add in DNC fund raising.
It also is the minimum the Illinois senator will need to generate each month between now and November if he is to match the more than $200 million budget the Republicans have set for boosting McCain’s campaign.
The true competitor to Obama will be the Republican National Committee, rather than McCain, who has agreed to accept about $84 million in public financing for his general election campaign.
Plus, Obama is hemorrhaging money on his campaign. His spending is going out the door at a much faster clip than McCain despite the fact that McCain needs to spend his money before the public financing deadline.
What does all this mean? That Obama is probably exaggerating his fund raising prowess, and that before this is all problem he’s going to have funding issues.
