Obama Opposes House Plan Requiring GM, Chrysler To Re-Open Dealerships
Sigh…
July 15 (Bloomberg)—President Barack Obama “strongly opposes” an effort in Congress to require General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC to restore relationships shed during bankruptcy proceedings, while stopping short of a veto threat.
The administration said today in a statement that “the decision by Chrysler and GM to rationalize their dealer networks was a critical part of their overall restructuring to achieve long-term viability in order to save jobs in the long run.”
The statement also said it would set a “dangerous precedent” to “intervene into a closed judicial bankruptcy proceeding on behalf of one particular group at this point.”
That last bit has me wiping tears of laughter out of my eyes. The Obama administration, which stepped in and nationalized both of these car manufacturers and is now essentially running them, including which of their dealerships they will and will not be shutting down, is now lecturing Congress about the inappropriateness of intervening in the bankruptcy proceedings. As if this whole three-ring circus, including the bankruptcy, hadn’t been coordinated and managed by Obama all along.
What’s shocking to me is that car dealerships are now a point of contention between the President and Congress. How did we get to a point where the government is debating which car dealerships will be open in the future and which will not?
It’s a sign of just how far down the road toward totalitarianism, and away from freedom and free markets, we’ve gone.
