Obama On Imus: I Wouldn’t Have Anyone Like That Working For Me

Here’s what Obama had to say about Don Imus after the latter referred to a black girl’s sports team as a bunch of “nappy-headed ho’s.”

April 11, 2007 — “I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus,” Obama told ABC News, “but I would also say that there’s nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude.”

Here’s Obama’s reverend, who was on Obama’s campaign and who was referred to just day by Obama himself as a member of the family, preaching just after the 9/11 attacks:

We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.

Now I ask: Which comment was more offensive? The stupid remark from Imus or Obama’s reverend saying that 9/11 was our fault for being American?
Then ask yourself why Obama condemns one of these men but not the other.

Imus was stupid to say what he said, AND it was racist!

    Which part?

When I hear “nappy-headed”, I immediately think of one of my ex-girlfriends and her freaking dreadlocks. I used to tease her about her nappy-headedness, at least until she got that shit cut. Dreadlocks are nappy!

Was that “racist”? Can you guess her race?

Hos are sluts of all races.

Never thought Imus’ comments were racist. Not those ones at least.

Can you refer me to a comment made by Wright where he insults a white person on their physical appearance as did Imus?

    No. You. Cant.

Again, with un-equal comparisons in an attempt to make a point. Lame.

There is a difference in the context of the two remarks.

Imus’s remark was meant to get a cheap laugh.

Wright’s remarks were meant to instill a hatred of America in his followers.

I think any reasonable person can see the difference.

    Reverse bigotry…

    What makes it “reverse”?

There’s no such thing. It either is or it isn’t.

For sure Zsa Zsa. Anytime there is a large group of people filled with exuberant anger and we’re the enemy, that’s a concern.

Lik, You are correct. BUT isn’t the terminology “Ho” a predominately black term? Isn’t it an ebonic slang word? AND The term “nappy headed” to me could refer to any race. BUT Imus used it in a demeaning way towards a group of black women. In my opinion it was rude of Imus to say that to any woman regardless of their race.

The comment Imus made was uncalled for. BUT he was only repeating what the rap music video crowd referred to women as. Imus was stupid to say what he said, AND it was racist! The Rev. Wright was clearly Racist and Hate filled in a BIG way! Not to mention unpatriotic…

Reverse bigotry is not a legitimate form of political expression.

    Lessee…..
Imus REPEATS what has been said hundreds of times in rap music that is broadcast on publically available airwaves….and it’s racist?..Why?
Because a white man used a black slang term?
Sure! It was a bone-headed comment.
    .
    ..
On the other hand, Obama surrounds himself with folks that are adamately pro-black/anti-white & that’s supposed to be OK?
    Think this through……
His own Wife has only recently been Proud of America & even her thesis smacks of racism.
    Ditto on his preacher.
And why has he not involved his white side of the Family in the campaign?
    Is that omission racist?

Lik, I think individuals such as Rev. Wright get people enraged and filled with hate. He and those types of preachers and groups no matter what race they hate love to get us all stirred up. Hate is not a good thing.

BUT isn’t the terminology “Ho” a predominately black term? Isn’t it an ebonic slang word?

You’re asking someone of the rap generation this?

I couldn’t tell you. It’s not for my generation.

BUT Imus used it in a demeaning way towards a group of black women.

That shouldn’t matter. To say that race doesn’t matter, only to then turn around and apply race to the situation, kind of defeats the entire purpose of saying that race doesn’t matter.

  • http://www.willisms.com/ Zsa Zsa

I like to think of my “people” as being Americans, not a race. It is such a waste of time to hate anyone. Especially for being a certain race.

What a lie you’ve put here.

Obama has criticized Rev. Wright much harsher than he did Don Imus. Obama dedicated a whole column to criticizing Rev. Wright at Huffpost.com.
