Obama Not Met With Cheering or Applause from Marines During Christmas Dinner

“Met with silence” is how Gateway Pundit describes Obama visiting Marines in Hawaii during their Christmas dinner:

FROM ABC NEWS’ SUNLEN MILLER IN HAWAII:
President-elect Obama stopped by the Marine Corps base in Hawaii Kaneche Bay where servicemen and -women were eating Christmas dinner in Kailua Thursday evening.
“Just wanted to say hi, hey guys,” Obama said as he walked into the Anderson dining hall which was decked out in Christmas decorations.
The diners represented seven military units — Marine and Navy — some of whom were joined by their families for Christmas dinner.
As Obama entered the room, it was absent of the regular fanfare of cheering and clapping. The diners were polite, staying seated at their respective tables and waited for the president-elect to come to them to stand up.

Let’s contrast that with GWB visiting the troops during their Thanksgiving dinner in 2003:

Paul Bremer, the top US civilian administrator in Iraq, who was on a scheduled visit to the troops, told them he was going to read a message from the president.
But he then announced he would defer to the most senior person present – Mr Bush’s cue to appear.
“I was just looking for a warm meal somewhere,” Mr Bush said. “Thanks for inviting me to dinner … I can’t think of a finer group of folks to have Thanksgiving dinner with than you all.”
Mr Bush told cheering troops he brought a message on behalf of America: “We thank you for your service, we are proud of you and America stands solidly behind you.”

I would imagine that our resident trolls will be screaming “ODS” before all the “1″s and “0″s are dry on this post. It sems they are unable to process any news that reflects badly on Mr. Obama in any way shape or form. The derangement is all theirs!

No need to go back to ’03 for an example of the troops response to W. At each garrison he visited on his last tour of the M-E he was greeted with standing ovations and raucus cheering, even when he gave permission for troops to remain seated.

Aradisedp, your attempt to paint Barri as some great leader, giving benign permission for those Marines to remain seated is laughable.

dinothefakehomo? It is an all volunteer military, and the average PV-1 has substantially more education than you. This is what the Marine Corps is about today.

25 years has shown me something.

    Semper I

I watched the video. Just a frustrated Lance Coolie speaking his peace. I heard that same guy re-upped and just got Corporal. That shit’s been goin on since 1776. We were never promised a rose garden. Hell, I’ve felt that way a time or two (before they had YouTube). I’m sure they had a hell of a time with the Vietnam troops badmouthing authority. As I’ve told fellow Marines, only the tough survive and only fools (like me) stay in after 4. It works for some and not most. Do I want my son to join? Hell no. As parents, don’t we always want better for our children? Would I balk if he joined? NO! I love the Corps and honor any man/woman who is willing to put up with so much bullshit to do what they believe in…for whatever reasons.

Will Obama earn their respect? That’s to be determined. After Jan 20, he and Congress will have the power to change how they are used; he will have opportunity to abuse them; he will have opportunity to screw them; he will have opportunity to do great things with them…it’s all in the way he plays his hand. I’m willing to give him a chance.

I’m just glad we’re in the USA and not Zimbabwe, Iran, Nicaragua, Mexico, Sudan, or any other country where we couldn’t speak our minds without risk of prison, torture or death. How great that those soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and coastguardsmen have put up with BS and shall continue to do so just so we can have a voice!

    Happy New Year America!

I’m a retired Marine…22 years (85 – 07). Obama went in the door and said, “please stay seated and enjoy your dinner.” Sad that the facts weren’t relayed accurately. And Marines will respect the president-elect when he is inaugurated. They will not dishonor themselves by disrespecting the office, no matter their personal views. Most do not support this war, but they will do as they are told because it is their job and there is much honor in that.

Some of y’all are delusional and paranoid. Those of us actually in the military (USMC) do not see a President Obama as a threat vis-a-vis his plan to “gut the military” which does not exist. We see him carrying out the same plans of occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq as the Bush regime has laid out for him. Obama is going to continue US support of the terror nation of Israel, just as Bush has. The US military is going to expand under an Obama administration. The bs about gutting the military is just bs.

Oh goody! Rugby idiot played his veteran card. Well there are many veterans on this board (including me) so good for you. It doesn’t excuse the fact you sound like a bitter democrat that doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about.

Too fucking funny. Your attempts, lame and pathetic as they are, to portray Barri as a Great and Beneficent Leader who Beneficently “gave” permission to those Marines not to stand and applaud Him as he descended and dirtied Himself among those filthy and barbarous murderers are absolutely fucking hi-larious. Barri has, throughout the last 3 years, made clear that He holds anyone who volunteers for the US Military in the utmost contempt.

But hey! Keep spinning those lies! They so fucking funny.

Well first of all, IMO, Rugby is a stupid game!

Next, as 2Hotel9 pointed out, one can describe measures that gut the military and never use the words “gut the military,” and yet by his many words betray the fact he will gut the military. Almost no liberasl would say they are socialists, but by their words and policies we know they are. They can say they are against abortion, but by their policies and words prove that they are in favor of killing inncoent children in the womb.

Obama describes massive cuts in the military budget, thus gutting the military without every saying he will gut the military!

Your despising them for serving speaks volumes about you.

Nothing in that clip said anything about “gutting the military.” What Obama says in that clip makes sense, but he says nothing about “gutting” our military. If I’m not mistaken, Obama has proposed expanding and growing our military forces.

  • http://www.uniteddems.com/ Aradisedp

First, I didn’t attempt to paint Obama as a great leader…we’ve yet to see evidence of that. I simply stated a fact. I have a friend (a 1stSgt) stationed in Kaneohe Bay who attended the dinner…he told me about it. As a journalist, I know how easy it is to pick apart comments and spin them according to one’s own agenda.

Dino, be careful of your blanket statements. You alienate yourself easily by closing your mind and people will automatically respond to you the same way.

I personally am encouraged by all this banter. I’m also encouraged that people everywhere are talking…even complete strangers at the post office and grocery store. What’s more, with all the dialogue inspired by all this talk of change, shouldn’t we jump on that and offer our two cents rather than try to shoot the knees of the messenger?

Good ol boy…honey, you are a voice of reason (I like that) and I’d like to share that my 2007 office in Camp Victory (Baghdad) and 2005-6 offices in Djibouti/Kenya/Yemen/Uganda, etc. were always full of coalition forces discussing this “war on terror.” I find it incredible that some people refuse to accept that military service personnel can disagree politically and yet support our commander-in-chief. Obama doesn’t have the job yet, but as others have posted, Marines and the other branches will respect the position. It’s up to Obama to earn their respect as a leader. Guess we’ll see.

As for the survey you requested, here’s one from Aug 08 based on campaign donations of $200 or more. I suspect if we included the contributions of the liberal troops (E-5 and below) the numbers would be higher. What with them deployed so often, leaving their families, suffering from PTSD–missing limbs–burns–etc, losing their homes, unable to find jobs when they return (check those stats in your own state), and numerous other issues, they simply tend to look to who is promising them more…even if it’s only a promise that has yet to be delivered. My young Marines were all over the board with their support for McCain/Obama. http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2008/08/troops-deployed-abroad-give-61.html

I ask this of everyone who posts here. Please try to understand the rationale and motivation/agenda behind whatever spin you read or deliver yourself.

    God bless the USA!

  • Neiman

But if they can’t respect the President because he’s not as republican, screw that. If the military is opposed to the President it’s like a South American banana republic.

They must and will follow his orders as Commander-In-Chief. But, respect must be earned and all they have to go on today is his anti-military record as Senator, but mostly because of his speeches and stated policies as Presidential Candidate, which were quite demeaning and included promises to gut the military. Billy Jeff gutted our intelligence services and the military, setting the stage for increased terror attacks against America, and it appears Mahdi Obama may go even further in expressing his hatred for both the military and our intelligence services. So, their reservations are quite natural.

Marines, I am an inactive Marine as is “former Marine” who commented under this thread, as there is no such thing as a former Marine, we are all part of that special fraternity for life; but I digress, anyway when in Combat in defense of America Marines will always give their very best, as they will in training for war; so Imam Obama’s cool reception has absolutely nothing to do with their professional approach to their duties or unconditional loyalty to America.

You also see something else in this, mainly that out of hundreds of thousands of people, less than 300 donated in these amounts. Trying to see where the military, of about 1 million people, stands by these 300 contributions is assinine.

Plus, there’s no shortage of soldiers who take their oath to be apolitical seriously. They’ll vote, but they won’t openly voice opinions, donate, hold rallies, etc.

The inbed would not work here, so you’ll have to go to this link to watch and hear Mahdi Obama talk about gutting the military!

While he gives lip service to increasing the numbers of troops, he also promises to drastically cut the military budget for hardware necessary for those troops to fight, through refusing new nuclear weapons development and reducing our missile shields in europe to give our enemies the advantage in any combat roles. He is going to try and gut military spending, by his own words!

The Left distrusts the military and believe in appeasing our enemies and like Billy Jeff, his policies will gut the military and our intelligence services. But, don’t worry, he and Rahm will build a civilian army to deal with any opposition at home.

Not necessarily Arid. When Clinton was President there was a function where the military present wouldn’t drink after toasting him.

I don’t hate them for serving, that’s your impression of liberals. I feel sorry for them. If I had my way they would all be given jobs and a guaranteed income when they returned. I’ve read and heard about too many of those guys who come back damaged and are expected to survive on $1600 a month disability when they were only making around $3000 active duty. Just heard that story on NPR yesterday. Like the extra $1400 would break this country? Some of the homeless in our cities- too many- are veterans. That’s wrong.

The military is entirely focused on the OFFICE, not the man, unless that man has proven himself exceptional in support and respect. If that is the case the military will show respect and appreciation in kind.

Word gets around the military pretty quick, go figure. They don’t brush off phrases like the campaign vitreol Obamie spewed, and they will react accordingly. The Clintons forced the uniforms off the Whitehouse guard and marked themselves forever as contemptable by all branches. But the Office of President is sacrosanct, and all honor and respect is shown that Office, regardless the man holding it. That is how deep, intense and ageless the regard for the Office of President is to some…
