Obama Moves Event From Brandeburg To Monument Placed By Hitler To Celebrate Global German Dominance

Making it not exactly an ideal place to celebrate “historic” relations between America and Germany, which is how the Obama is billing the event.

Once again the Obama campaign’s grasp of history leaves something to be desired.

Still, even as the issue of his speech’s location has now been settled, a number of politicians in Berlin are still dissatisfied with the site. The Siegessäule — or Victory Column — was erected in memory of Prussia’s victories over Denmark (1864), Austria (1866) and France (1870/71). The column originally stood in front of the Reichstag, Germany’s parliament building, but was moved by Adolf Hitler to its current location in 1939 to make way for his planned transformation of Berlin into the Nazi capital “Germania.”

“The Siegessäule in Berlin was moved to where it is now by Adolf Hitler. He saw it as a symbol of German superiority and of the victorious wars against Denmark, Austria and France,” the deputy leader of the Free Democrats, Rainer Brüderle, told Bild am Sonntag. He raised the question as to “whether Barack Obama was advised correctly in his choice of the Siegessäule as the site to hold a speech on his vision for a more cooperative world.”

I’m still questioning Obama’s decision to campaign for an American election in Europe.

Of course we won’t see much of this in the MSM.

The jet airplane, the rocket, the Panzer tank, you neo-cons should love his battle tactics.

Ah, the old “Hitler kept the trains running on time” argument.  Always a fun one.

Nice attempt at obfuscation, Mr. Economically Illiterate Protectionist, but Hitler’s placement of that monument wasn’t one of his good ideas.  It expressed his desire for global dominance by his Nazi regime.

And Obama, in his utter ignorance, is speaking in front of it because he thinks it represents important US-German relations.

Just once I’d like to hear one of you Obama disciples break down and admit that your messiah just did something stupid.

Obama could give a teleprompted speech in the midst of a satan worshipping blood orgy while slaughtering small children and the Obamatards would still love him…

You meant BrandeNburg.....there is an N in the word, that you left out.

The Victory Column (German: Siegessäule (help·info)) is a famous sight in Berlin, Germany. Designed by Heinrich Strack after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian war, by the time it was inaugurated on 2 September 1873 Prussia had also defeated Austria in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870/1871), giving the statue a new purpose. Different from the original plans, these later victories in the so-called Unification Wars inspired the addition of the bronze sculpture of Victoria, 8.3 meters high and weighing 35 tonnes, designed by Friedrich Drake. Berliners, with their fondness for giving nicknames to famous buildings, call the statue Goldelse, meaning something like “Golden Liz”.

Like the name you got wrong, you also get the significance wrong as well.

This is perfect for Barrack.  After his speech he can go over to the souvenir stands and pick up a brown “I marched with Hitler” t-shirt.

A campaign opportunity and the ability to fulfill a life long ambition.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

How appripo from the obama group.
Reminds me of a speech....
“And now, my dear fellow-countrymen, do you believe that these men, who with us are going the same way, will end the Revolution? They do not wish the end of the Revolution, for they do not need it. For them the Revolution is milk and honey.

And further they cannot end the Revolution. For if one or another amongst the leaders were really not seducer but seduced, and today, driven by the inner voice of horror at his crime, were to step before the masses and make his declaration: ‘We have all deceived ourselves: we believed that we could lead you out of misery, but we have in fact led you into a misery which your children and your children’s children must still bear’ - he cannot say that, he dare not say that, he would on the public square or in the public meeting be torn in pieces.”

For what it’s worth, in my experience the Germans don’t think of the Siegessauele as tainted by the Hitler period.

It’s definitely a Prussian monument. The people who should be offended are the French, who lost in 1871.

I still say the Zeppelin Field is the choice.

Carter, I guess I can’t speak for German attitudes about the monument, but its pretty clear how Hitler used it.

But even so, seems like a silly place to discuss US/German relations.

Hannitized, yes I forgot an “N” in Brandenburg.  But you see, I can fix typos.

You’re kind of stuck being stupid.
