Obama Lying To Reporters About His Smoking Habits?

Jack Tapper of ABC feels like Obama has been something less than truthful with him about his smoking habit.

Obama ran off before I could ask him if he’d just snuck a smoke, so I called his campaign.

They denied it. He’d quit months before, in February, they insisted. He chewed nicorette…

Except….last night on MSNBC’s Hardball, Obama admitted that his attempt to wean himself from the vile tobacco weed had not been entirely successful…

It’s not a big deal in the scheme of things — the war on Iraq, a major economic crisis — indeed, it’s miniscule. Hardly worth mentioning.

Except that I don’t like feeling that I wasn’t being dealt with honestly. And as much as citizens who are suspect of the media might scoff at such a notion, many of us consider ourselves to be your representatives to help make sure our leaders are telling us the truth, and leading the country down a path we’re confident is the right one.

So...does this matter?  Normally I’d say that something like a smoking habit doesn’t really matter as it doesn’t speak to the candidate’s policy stances, but smoking is risky behavior health-wise for someone Obama’s age and if the New York Times can make an issue out of McCain’s melanoma surgery from nearly a decade ago we can talk about Obama’s smoking.

I hate it when candidates tell those little lies. Like smoking or military service, or DUI’s or cocaine use, or wmd’s....oh wait that wasnt’ when he was a candidate.

Anyone who has smoked (myself included) knows exactly what he is talking about and exactly what he is trying to do....

but you are right...we certainly don’t wany anyone in office that tells lies or is a complete moron....

Lying to cover something like this shows weakness of character and profound disrespect for the American people.

Media uncovers more Palin stories in one weekend than Obama stories in two years. Still no bias detected

Just look at the reporters’ mouth hanging open and this scum lies right to her face.

Bush lied about his drinking problems?  That’s news to me.  I’m pretty sure Bush has been rather forthright about his drinking problems.

And I know “Bush lied people died” is an article of faith for you, Brad, but Bush never lied about the WMD’s.  Our intelligence was wrong, but that wasn’t a lie.

By the way, I kinda like the fact that Obama’s a smoker.  Maybe that’ll finally make all you liberal smoking nazis see the light.  I doubt it, but a guy can hope.

And still, Obama should be honest.

Brad,

Your petty little snark against Mr. Bush might be marginally less adolescent if you had anything substantive with which to back up your accusations.  But, of course, you don’t.  That’s the point.

As for the “moron” bit, I’d be willing to wager that Mr. Bush’s intelligence and his education far exceed anything you could personally offer in comparison.

WHO GIVES A CRAP. Why can’t reporters cover real issues with one tenth the zeal they cover things that don’t matter. Reporters spend way too much time pursuing potentially scandalous or a “gotcha” moments.

Yes, George Bush told the truth about his drinking.  He is an honest man.  Some have great difficulty recognizing honesty because perhaps they have never been exposed to honest people.  During my 29 years teaching school I encountered quite a few students who lied all the time.  Their parents taught them well.
I feel sorry for Chelsea and all those who have such bad examples for parents.

Give BHO some credit, he owned up to the failing.  His minions lied, the kool-aid drinkers are always dangerous.

As someone who has spent the better part of the last two years quitting tobacco (and hasn’t had a cigarette/cigar/dip since Fat Tuesday) I have to say: Tapper sounds a lot more like my girlfriend when I come back from an enchanting evening of watching hockey at the smokey neighborhood bar, than say, a professional reporter for a major news organization covering a presidential campaign.

Operative differences being, my girlfriend is much more attractive than Tapper, and has a legitimate personal concern for my health and hygiene. On top of that, she knows if I am being on the level, as my snoring is about 25 decibels louder after a cigarette.

Brad does have a point, though: after the last 20 years of human interest stories masquerading as political analysis; decades of lies and catastrophies incurred by said lies, THIS is supposed to be news?

Seriously, after television, cigarettes have to be the most dangerous and addictive substance available. It’s difficult enough to be nagged by a beautiful woman of Norweigan extraction when you’re trying to quit, I can only imagine how difficult it is to try to quit while being nagged by political reporters.

It’s Jake, not Jack, Sparky. Not that that doesn’t make the whole thing any less moronic.
