Obama Has Only Spoken To The US Commander In Afghanistan Once

Not exactly the hallmark of a good commander-in-chief, I think:

The military general credited for capturing Saddam Hussein and killing the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq says he has only spoken to President Obama once since taking command of Afghanistan.
“I’ve talked to the president, since I’ve been here, once on a VTC ,” General Stanley McChrystal told CBS reporter David Martin in a television interview that aired Sunday.
“You’ve talked to him once in 70 days?” Mr. Martin followed up.
“That is correct,” the general replied.
This revelation comes amid the explosive publication of an classified report written by the general that said the war in Afghanistan “will likely result in failure” of more troops are not added next year. Yet, the debate over health care reform continues to dominate Washington’s political discussions.
Former U.S. Ambassador for the United Nations John Bolton said this was indicative of President Obama’s misplaced priorities.

Now, I don’t think that the President has to do everything himself. Being the chief executive for the United States means having your fingers in a lot of different pots and certainly there’s nothing wrong with delegating. That being said, Obama himself spoke about the importance of winning the war in Afghanistan during the campaign. Now we’re at a critical moment in that war, our chief commander on the ground is asking for more troops, and Obama is ignoring him.

    Dereliction of Duty.

Rob can’t even cut and paste correctly…

This revelation comes amid the explosive publication of an classified report written by the general that said the war in Afghanistan “will likely result in failure” of more troops are not added next year.

So it’s not that he needs to talk to the president, it’s that he needs the troops!

Gee, how did Rob manage to screw up the importance and significance of the story in order to complain about something he doesn’t understand?

Hmm. Visit with my top military commander in Afghanistan or chat with Letterman…tough call!

You tell your General to win the war.
Your general can’t do the job (winning the war against a ragtag militia).
And the funny thing is that the Rusians are not supplying this ragtag militia with advanced weaponry like we did when the soviets were there.
You fire said General, and find one able and willing to win.
It matters not how many times you talk to him.

  • brain trust

Apparently the CINC isn’t too interested in winning in Afghanistan. CINC needs to be replaced.

Why would BO talk to the Generals. During the campaign he said he’d take their advise… he can’t take their advice if he actually TALKS to them.

He hated the sucessful surge in Iraq. You have to think that he doesn’t want to add troops in Afghanistan…

Besides, he’s busy enslaving our kids and grandkids to China.

  • Hannitized

During the campaign he said he’d take their advise… he can’t take their advice if he actually TALKS to them.

Obama does not need to speak to him, to get his advice. He can submit his recommendations formally or through proxy. Proxy, would be more likely.

Obama is Commander-In-Chief and during war if he does not talk to his field Commanders on almost a daily basis that he might lead the war effort, it is a dereliction of his prime duty, providing for the common defense. He does not because in his heart he hates the military as do most liberals and believes in appeasing our enemies not confronting and defeating them.

You tell your General to win the war. Your general can’t do the job (winning the war against a ragtag militia).

Even Lincoln and FDR found that close communications with field commanders during a time of war was an essential responsibility of the CIC. Your generals cannot win without the tools and support of the CIC. But, Obama has no knowledge of the military or war and no desire at all to support a military he hates. Let him fire this general, it is better than him having to come to grips with reality!

Commanders can speak to the president, through proxy.

They don’t need to talk directly to communicate.

While certainly Obama could get their advice indirectly, competent Presidents have always consulted their generals and admirals. They certainly didn’t blow off the military leadership while appearing on Letterman.

It doesn’t surprise me the President BO has only had one conversation with is general on the ground. After all, he had no experience in running a business and yet wants to run car companies, banks and health care. Why wouldn’t he think he could run a war?

  • doesn’t matter

Funny, but I remember the narrative for the failure in Viet Nam being the fault of too much involvement from the civilian leadership.

Now, Afghanistan is going to be a failure because the civilian leadership is too detached?

Sounds more like McChrystal should be fired. Either he is playing politics in a war zone, or he is so incompetent that he needs constant advice from Obama (of all people).

McChrystal should be the happiest general alive given that Obama is willing to up the troop numbers but not meddle in the general’s affairs. What is he expecting from Obama? If McChrystal needs Obama to hold his hand (a man with _no_ military experience) then he should step down and let a general take over who could make the most out of a golden opportunity to get some fighting done while we have a president who has no interest in meddling in the day to day operations of the military.

Hey, Toot? Whose suckpuppet is this, “doesn’t matter on September 28, 2009 at 01:38 pm” awfully wordy for a driveby troll.

Since Barri specifically picked McChrystal, made a big deal out of picking him in fact, and then ignored what the General had to tell him, it would certainly seem as though Barri never intended to carry on with combat operations in Afghanistan, was in fact simply looking for someone to scapegoat and precipitate a withdrawal. Too bad McChrystal didn’t follow Barri’s little script.

Obama has spoken in person to David Letterman more times than he has his top general in Afghanistan.

    That say’s it all.

  • Thought Criminal #31625

McChrystal probably can’t find the sorry sack of shit. He spends all his time and our money jet setting all over the world. Wonder what his carbon footprint is?

  • WOOFX

Talk to the General whose classified report was leaked to contradict what his boss the President said the day before.
    What to say?
    Hmm, your fired ?

  • WOOFX

The General is somewhere below all these guys
    in the chain of command.

    CiC
    Secretary of Defense
    Secretary of the Army?
    Chairman JT Chiefs of Staff?

Hey Poodle, remember when the Democrats were saying “listen to the generals on the ground?”

    Funny how standards change.
