Obama Embarrassed Of America Because Americans Aren’t Bilingual

We rubes quit worrying about the illegal immigrants learning English, sayeth the Messiah.  Instead, we should be worrying about when our children are going to learn Spanish.

You know, I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, “We need to have English- only.” They want to pass a law, “We want English-only.”

Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.

You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], “Merci beaucoup.” Right?

You know, no, I’m serious about this. We should understand that our young people, if you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get a job. You are so much more employable.

Now I’m not going to argue against bilingualism.  I don’t know how powerful a tool it is for getting a job, certainly having a second language isn’t all that important where I’m from but North Dakota isn’t New York or LA either, but I think it’s a good thing.  It expands knowledge and understanding of other cultures and that is important.

But bilingualism isn’t the issue when it comes to English-only policy.  Nobody is demanding that Spanish and French and German not be taught in our schools.  What is being demanded is that the taxpayers not be forced to pay for the translation of government documents and signs and such into other languages to cater to people who come to this country - most of them illegally - and don’t even have enough respect for our society to learn our language.

A lot of Americans are tired of paying for such things.  They’re tired of the idea that our country has to cater to people who don’t respect it.  That’s not how it works.  Most of us wouldn’t move to France, refuse to learn French, and then expect the French government to cater to us with translated forms and road signs.  It’s unreasonable.  If you want to live in France you learn French.  If you want to live in America you learn English.

Also, Germans and Frenchies and other Europeans are bilingual because their continent is roughly the size of our country, and their countries are roughly the size of our states, and so there’s a lot more cultural intermingling going on over there.  They’re bilingual because of the environment they live in, not because they’re smarter than us as Obama implies.

I can speak enough Hungarian, German and French to get by, but I’ll bet that is not what he is hinting about.  His bilingual is code word for Spanish-Mexican, not Spanish-Spanish or Spanish South American.

To me, it’s not just a question of how much money is being spent on the translations.  More, it’s about the undermining of the culture that comes from the ability of a large demographic group to cut themselves off from the rest of the country and thus avoid any kind of assimilation.  The result is radical groups like La Raza and the “Aztlan” push, not to mention all the May Day demonstrations of a few years ago.  Learning the language common to (almost) all citizens is one way to assure that normal, everyday conversations can be had with one’s neighbors, which impels common ground to be able to be found.

Is this his “first time in my adult life I’m embarrassed/proud of my Country” statement?
Or is he wanting to take a fatherly direction-giving stance?
I’d bet on the second one.
His handlers are trying every angle to convince America that he’s in charge.
Right from the beginning, when he requested Secret Service cavalcades, the idea was to portray him as the President.
Even with his podium seal.
It’s a P.R. scheme

I took two years of German and two years of Spanish, never used either one… Then I started working for Michelin and had to learn French… By the way, it’s a myth that most Europeans are multi-lingual.  Ask an Englishman that’s not in government/foreign service how many languages they speak.  Most areas outside the non-tourist areas of France only speak French.  About the only countries that have a majority of people that are multi-lingual is The Netherlands and Switzerland, and those countries would prefer you speak English rather than having you struggle through your Dutch, German or French.

Obama seems to ignore the fact that before one can be bilingual, one must first be lingual.

I guess ebonics no longer counts towards a second language?

Having a permanent underclass is vital for the Democrats that rely on class politics.  The best way to do that is to keep the underclass uneducated.  Having them unable to participate in the economy because they don’t speak the language is even better.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Only when there’s school funding involved!

Bill Cosby will tell you that it doesn’t count as a first.  Again, I’ll be glad to worry about whether kids are bilingual when our schools are ensuring they’re lingual to begin with.  One step at a time, you know.

If I were going to immigrate to Spain, I would certainly learn Spanish, even before I immigrated there.  On the other hand, if I were just going to visit, or if I were only going there to take what I could grab for myself and the folks back home, I not only wouldn’t learn Spanish, but would seek out other invaders so that I wouldn’t have to learn Spanish to get along. I would just get what I could, and send money back home to my relatives.
You get the idea…

Just when I think Obama has said the dumbest thing that he can say he tops it with something else.

This is true of both sides, they both play this game for different reasons. Dont be intellectually dishonest.

I not only wouldn’t learn Spanish, but would seek out other invaders so that I wouldn’t have to learn Spanish to get along.

I have always admired those invaders for working our fields and building our homes and digging our ditches. Damn, we have alot of companies employing the invaders. Most invaders wouldnt work building and picking produce. Most invaders just plunder and rape. We get to eat from the hands of our invaders!!
I guess at least we get a kinder, gentler invasion huh?
Overstatement usually leads to dismissal. Your point is well taken, but your overstatements and fear make you once again easily dismissable bobbie.

Great comments by the Texans for those who have picked up a bit of Spanish, or who can (a la Dan Quayle) pick it out with a knowledge of Latin and English cognates.

Almost anybody that travels internationally knows a smattering of the languages of the countries they visit.  For instance, I know a bit of French, Spanish, Dutch and Germany, places I have been.  For those that never travel much, learning other languages is pretty much a waste of time because you can’t become proficient in a foreign language unless you are emerged into a society where the language is the norm.

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.
