Obama Driving General Motors Into Bankruptcy

Obama’s only been the defacto CEO of GM for a matter of weeks now, after having canned the previous CEO, but I think it’s more than fair to blame him for GM’s failure. After all, it was Obama and his fellow liberals (and some Republicans too, shame on them) who set out to save General Motors from failure because the company was “too big to fail” (read: “too important a host for union parasites to allow to fail”) and now it’s Obama and those same liberals who are going to be “assisting” General Motors as it declares bankruptcy.

DETROIT — The Treasury Department is directing General Motors to lay the groundwork for a bankruptcy filing by a June 1 deadline, despite G.M.’s public contention that it could still reorganize outside court, people with knowledge of the plans said during the weekend.
Members of President Obama’s automotive task force spent last week in meetings and on conference calls with G.M. officials and its advisers in Detroit and Washington. Those talks are expected to continue this week.
The goal is to prepare for a fast “surgical” bankruptcy, the people who had been briefed on the plans said. G.M., which has been granted $13.4 billion in federal aid, insists that a quick restructuring is necessary so its image and sales are not damaged permanently.

This seems like an “Emperor Has No Clothes” moment. Months ago anyone suggesting that General Motors declare bankruptcy was accused of wanting economic chaos and not caring about the American worker. Now, months and billions in bailouts later, bankruptcy is the brilliant strategy from the Obama administration.
What I’m wondering is: Why did the government need to get involved at all? Why does General Motors need the government’s help to declare bankruptcy and restructure? Thousands of companies do that every single year. What’s so special about GM?
With that question, I think we’re back to the labor unions again. This isn’t really about saving General Motors. This has been about first trying to prop General Motors up so that the UAW could continue sucking the life blood out of it, and then (when that failed) entering into an extra-special sort of government-guided bankruptcy that will allow GM to restructure everything but its labor contracts with the unions.
Who are, in turn, some of the principle benefactors of the liberals currently running things in DC.
And suddenly, it all makes sense doesn’t it? The government is trying to run the economy. Not for our good, but for the benefit of the political class and their allies.

You complained that they should have entered bankruptcy before and now your complaining that they did.

The difference is 2 bailouts amounting to about 14 Billion dollars that belong to the taxpayer.

Do you think we’re going to get that back Rez/toobar/or whoever you are today?

It’s kinda funny you’d post that drivel when the subject at hand is how the union dominated business is heading into bankruptcy.

This is the double standard that gets to me…

Please… kindly remove the liberal-colored glasses before making ignorant and intentionally deflective comments.

Where the hell does one get a “double standard” out of a consistent stance on (1) letting bad business practices fail; and (2) don’t hook failing businesses up to the billion dollar gummint life support?

You can’t, if you have a single shred of intellectual honesty. There is no double standard from conservatives on this. I see not one single complaint about GM having to declare bankruptcy. Instead, we see only complaints about the true double standard perpetuated by the ZeroBambam administration.

The Obambi standard from a few weeks ago: The public will be put in debt for billions trying to save a unionized business… because it “must not be allowed to fail”.

The “new and improved” Obambi standard: “Oh vell, Komrade. You vill file bankruptcy. And you vill do eet on OUR schedule, not yours.”

That, for those of you who are overwhelmed by Obama’s musky scent, is pronounced “double standard.”

dino the asshat continues to astound everyone with his ignorance.

Government inaction over trade imbalance and over regulation doomed the auto industry along with democratic pandering to the extortionists known as the UAW.

This is what I wanted to do from the get go. It would haven’t cost us a dime to do it.

It would have been more painless in the long run. The bailout was to pay back the UAW. God, I hate unions.

How much experience does Obama have running major corporations?

It’s not like the people running business and the financial sector have been so competent at their jobs. It was those financial wizards from the best business schools in the world who got us into this mess.

    Dino:

Pretty sure the CRA and the GSEs had a lot more to do with it.

Go ahead Dino, spam us with the same already proven wrong shit that you are too stupid to understand has been refuted.

No skin off my back if you waste your bandwidth.

Unlike you I can be persuaded by reasonable, intelligent arguments. Since you are neither of these you have no hope in persuading me on anything.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Actually I would call it more like inconsistency in this case.

What happened is that when Obama took over the company a few weeks ago he thought that was it.

Magically by getting rid of the greedy CEO everything would be ok.

Turns out Obama doesn’t know jack about running a car business (just like he knows jack about anything else besides racial victimhood politics) (full disclosure I know nothing about running a car company either.)

So finally the smartest teleprompter in the world and it’s pet reader came to the conclusion that was obvious last fall. (Oh yeah, blame goes to GWB as well).

Disregard the little stem and his childish banter.

Command and control is the liberal mindset. It is the same with the TARP money forced on the banks.

Take the stem for example. No matter how stupid and wrong he is he continues to attempt his hijack on every post.

    They are just retarded.

  • 2Hotel9

Toot! You do, in point of fact, know something about running a car company. You know to find the people who know how to do it and get the hell out of their way.

  • Buzz

that will allow GM to restructure everything but its labor contracts with the unions.

Who are, in turn, some of the principle benefactors of the liberals currently running things in DC.

It is really something what a little PAC money will do for you isn’t it. That coupled with our ability to get out the vote and we rule the country.

Your time is past, the American worker is in charge now. Get used to it. It will be that way for a long time.

  • 2Hotel9

Perhaps Barri could explain why GM didn’t just file Chap 11 to begin with? Why did Barney Frank and Chris Dodd oppose that?

Compared to how many white collar bank jobs?

True enough, but I’m not in favor of subsidizing them either.

How much experience does Obama have running major corporations? How much running small businesses? None, you say? Can he even balance his own checkbook?

Had this been done at the outset, and the government merely guaranteed loans instead of a direct bailout, a reorganization and rebuild might have been a lot easier and a lot smoother. Now BO is up the crotch in this whole mess and dragging us into it.

The workers arent’ in charge, they’re in even less power than they were before. Has Obama EVER held a proper private sector job of leadership and responsibility? NO. He’s a politician. The politicians are in charge. They sell “the workers” empty promises, give them insincere non-apologies when they fail to deliver, and give them crumbs off their plates from food that originated in “the workers” own larders.

Man, you union shills are truly retarded. You can’t see when you’re being fleeced and bribed WITH YOUR OWN MONEY and then only a small portion of what was taken as the rest is kept by the political class.

Truly retarded. Why don’t you check into what the Soviet Union was like? The so-called workers were starving SLAVES, being ordered to make useless products NO ONE wanted to buy on the decisions of well-fed bureaucrats who had no idea what should be made and no interest in what people needed. To relate it to your job, imagine if everything you know of electrical wiring standards, codes, procedures, etc. was overriden by your boss every single time and he instead ordered you to do very nearly the opposite of what the customer contracted your outfit to do in the first place.

You get a contract to wire up all the outlets and switches and lights for a building, and instead of doing that, your boss has you wire up half as many outlets and for a fraction of the rating each circuit calls for, and put them everywhere except where the codes and plans say they should. THAT is socialism and command economics. THAT is what you are in favor of Buzz.
