Obama Campaign Manager: McCain Was Too Afraid To Pick Lieberman

Through his campaign Obama has referred to himself as a “post-partisan” politician.  The sort of guy to whom labels like “Republican” and “Democrat” doesn’t matter.  Well Chris Wallace but those claims to the test this Sunday asking Obama’s campaign manager David Axelrod to explain when Obama has ever taken on his own party like both Palin and McCain have.

Whilst bumbling his way toward an answer (the best thing he can come up with is Obama co-sponsoring some very non-controversial bi-partisan bills that passed almost unanimously), Axelrod claims that McCain didn’t pick Joe Lieberman to be his running mate because he was afraid to.

Given the way McCain has bucked his political base (much to their consternation) on things like taxes, illegal immigration and environmental issues it’s hard to imagine the guy being afraid to pick someone like Lieberman.  I think the truth is that McCain wants to win this race more than anything else, and that he knew choosing Palin would bring the sort of credibility to his campaign that conservatives have been craving.

And by no means was Palin a sure pick.  I don’t believe for a minute that Palin is too inexperienced to be VP, but she is untested in a national campaign.  Her injection into this race didn’t have to go well.  It could have gone very, very badly.  That it hasn’t is a testament to both McCain’s judgment in picking her, and her own brilliance as a politician and campaigner.

Comments

In the face of all the media attention being paid to Sarah Palin, and the enormously revitalized enthusiasm of the GOP’s conservative base, David Axlerod is getting desperate… and he ought to be.

Exactly, McCain was desperate to please the righties and too afraid to trust his own judgment about what he wanted in a vice-president. He was too afraid to choose Lieberman.  Not much of a leader there.

He would be allowing Lieberman to go on the press circuit and do the Sunday shows if he was the vice presidential pick, but he’s not allowing Palin, cuz he knows she aint ready for prime time.  She needs to be schooled on just what a vice-president does.

You’re redirecting and attributing agreement where none exists.

He was too afraid to choose Lieberman.

As well he should be. It would be pretty stupid for “McBush”, as you partisans call him, to pick a leftist candidate.

It’s a Republican ticket, not a Democrat one.

Not much of a leader there.

Translation: he doesn’t agree with me, so he’s not a leader.

He would be allowing Lieberman to go on the press circuit and do the Sunday shows if he was the vice presidential pick, but he’s not allowing Palin, cuz he knows she aint ready for prime time.

You’re doing that nasty habit of assuming again.

So lik agrees with Axelrod, that McCain was too afraid to choose Lieberman. And I’m glad to see you have his name right, McBush.

The fact is the only candidate of the four who hasn’t been seen on the sunday political shows is pretty telling. Res ipsa loquitur.

Projection on their part: Obama was too afraid to pick Hillary. (Yawn.)

Oh, and in case you geniuses on the left haven’t noticed, Hillary was at least of the same PARTY as Obama!

Puzzlefeet - So lik agrees with Axelrod, that McCain was too afraid to choose Lieberman.

You’re assuming again.

And I think you know it.

And I’m glad to see you have his name right, McBush.

You’re a hack who does not have the ability to debate honestly, as your repeated assumptions and assertions throughout this thread show. Res ipsa loquitur.

Gotta love Axelrod’s purple shirt and tie.  Not especially authoritative looking, but expressly metro-sexual.  Wouldn’t go over well in Scranton, Youngstown, East Lansing, or Gary, but it probably plays well in San Fransisco.

Poor baby, Lik, tries to make a point and ends up namecalling as usual.

The fact that Palin can’t stand the heat of questioning and has to be hidden away with her teachers. y’all were yipping about Lieberman speaking at the Repub. convention as a way to stick it to the dems. but when McCain actually wants him as his veep, y’all are “whoa, he’s a dem.”

Hypocrisy thy name is “poor lik”.

Puzzlefeet on September 7, 2008 at 11:02 am

Poor baby, Lik, tries to make a point and ends up namecalling as usual.

You must have missed the point.

And let’s see: “hack” = not acceptable. “Poor baby” = acceptable.

Sure, puzzlefeet. Whatever. And you wonder why I refer to you as a dishonest hack.

The fact that Palin can’t stand the heat of questioning and has to be hidden away with her teachers.

Yet another assumption.

y’all were yipping about Lieberman speaking at the Repub. convention as a way to stick it to the dems. but when McCain actually wants him as his veep, y’all are “whoa, he’s a dem.”

Is there supposed to be a point there? Welcoming the support of a leftist, while not wanting that leftist in power, is perfectly normal.

Hypocrisy thy name is “poor lik”.

What hypocrisy?

likwidshoe on September 7, 2008 at 11:08 am

Put it this way: Barack Obama welcomes your support. Does that translate into him wanting you on his ticket? Or his supporters wanting you on his ticket?

Of course not, though I’m sure Puzzlefeet will miss the point.

likwidshoe on September 7, 2008 at 11:11 am

Poor baby, Lik, tries to make a point and ends up namecalling as usual.

Calling someone who is a hack a hack is name calling?  You who constantly deride the opposition is not in a good position to accuse someone else of the same.

The only reason you support Leiberman as the Republican vp is that would help Obama.  Is calling you disingenious also name calling or does it describe your character?

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.

Exactly, McCain was desperate to please the righties and too afraid to trust his own judgment about what he wanted in a vice-president. He was too afraid to choose Lieberman.  Not much of a leader there.

Wrong....

If McCain had been desperate to please the “religious right” he could have just picked Huckabee and that would have unified the base of the party.

In terms of picking Lieberman. The Senator from Connecticut is a fine man, but he’s not even a Republican. In what reality would the presidential candidate of one party select the member of the oposing party to replace him something happened.

McCain’s selection of Palin was an inspired choice. He needed someone that was competent and would bring some excitement to the ticket. Palin is competent. She’s somewhat more qualified than Obama, and she’s young enough and different enough, and charismatic enough, to add that excitement.

My wife is a pro-choice registered Democrat. She didn’t vote in the Democratic primary because she didn’t like Hillary or Obama. She might have sat out the general election. But now she’s definitely going to vote for McCain, and Palin is one of the reasons why.

Wing Chun Geologist on September 7, 2008 at 11:16 am

In what reality would the presidential candidate of one party select the member of the oposing party to replace him something happened.

The made up reality.

In other words, the “reality based” upside down world that people like Puzzlefeet inhabit. In worlds such as hers, McCain would only be a “leader” if he picked a guy from her team as his running mate.

It makes no sense, but these are Democrats we are talking about.

likwidshoe on September 7, 2008 at 11:24 am

Actually, NOT choosing Lieberman for VP is a shrewd political move for McCain.

In the first place, McCain doesn’t need to shore up support in the political center as does Obama.  In fact, Obama’s primary campaign from the far Left has left the middle wide open for McCain.

Second, if the Senate stays as it current constituted, and Lieberman decides to give up on the Democrats entirely and caucus with the Republicans, President McCain will also have a narrow majority in the Senate.

Biden, who won 3% of the popular vote in the Democratic presidential primary in his home state of Delaware, and 1% or less in every other contest he entered, is ballot-box poison. Obama evidently chose him to assuage critics who point to his lack of foreign policy credentials. That was a deadly error, for by appearing to concede the critics’ claim that he knows little about foreign policy, Obama raised questions about whether he is qualified to be president in the first place

As a life long Democrats we knew that McCain was going to pick Lieberman, and we had our attack ads ready. How could he do this to us? Now we have to tell lies and half truths about Gov. Palin.
Just because our guy doesn’t have a clue doesn’t mean we won’t keep saying really dumb stuff. Oh how I hate these election. Why can’t we just make rule that whoever we say is THE ONE wins.

Time for axelrod to get back under the bus where he belongs, if they are so much about change, why does he say bush all the time. Its like saying the same joke over and over and over and over again. Chris wallace is hammering him right now on Fox

Yeah, saying Bush this and Bush that, when the man isn’t on the ballot-

It’s like telling a joke without a punchline; what follows after the windbag closes its trap is an uncomfortable silence, except for the crickets chirping.

It’s about as dumb and lazy as people who still have “Kerry/Edwards” stickers on their cars.

Deep down I think the DNC movers and shakers know they picked the wrong pony in obama. The press are another story. The same press that trash Palin have been enthusiastically uninterested in Obama’s skeletons, like Weather Underground bomber William Ayers or Barry O’s past cocain use.

Attacks on Palin’s inexperience only point back at Obama, who doesn’t even have her resume as governor. The media sales pitch for Obama is “make history.” But McCain-Palin gives voters a Plan B to still make history without taking a chance on the inexperienced Barry Obama.

The Democrats chose a community activist - and that’s how they see government. The Republicans chose a former Navy pilot, because they see government as an aircraft carrier - big, powerful and dangerous.

I’m looking forward to Sarah Palin’s inaugural speech - doing the beauty-queen wave that drives liberals nuts.

The funny thing is Obama was too afraid to pick Lieberman also. Is Axlerod having a little buyers remorse?
