Obama Campaign Issues Dress Code For Female Reporters

Obama would like the reporters traveling with him to refrain from wearing fingernail polish and open-toed shoes while visiting Israel and Jordan so as to not offend the locals.

Oh, and stockings are a must.

Reporters traveling overseas with Sen. Barack Obama were thrown a bit of curve last week when the campaign emailed a “dress code” for Israel and Jordan. Aides had passed along as a courtesy the list that they had distributed to their staff to follow. But some of the tips raised a few eyebrows, particularly among the female reporters.

“Do not wear green.” (Explained later as the color of Hamas)

“Do not wear nail polish.”

“Women should only wear a limited amount of jewelry.”

“Shoulders and arms must be fully covered (no strapless tops, no tank tops, no short sleeve shirts.)”

“Closed-toe shoes, women should also wear stockings.”

At historical and religious sites, a suit or slacks should be worn, shoulders and arms must be covered (“no strapless tops, no tanks tops no short sleeve shirts”), shoes might need to be removed, and women may be asked to cover their heads and “should be prepared with a scarf/pashmina,” the email stated.

First, I don’t understand why all of this applies to Israel.  Don’t the Israelis have girls in the military?  Isn’t Israel an open and democratic nation?  Who does the Obama campaign really want to pander to here?  The Israelis themselves?  Or the Islamic extremists that infest Israel?  And what are Israelis supposed to make of the opinion of their society Obama is expressing with this dress code?

Ed Morrissey says that “This gives more than just a faint whiff of paternalism.” He’s right.  As fawning and deferent as the press corps may seem to Obama, they don’t work for him.  Issuing them a dress code is a pretty arrogant move.

And, presumably, most of these reporters are veterans.  Old hands at globe trotting.  In fact, I’d be willing to wager that most of them have spent more time visiting middle eastern hot spots than Obama himself has.

Personally, I see this as a microcosm of what an Obama administration would be like.  Overbearing.  Arrogant.  Incessantly paternal.  Knows what’s best for you more than you do.

I think that is a description of the ultimate nanny govenment aka totalitarianism.  What we can expect from Obama as prez.

Israel has Hasidim extremists,
Jordan the Muslim version?

Guests should dress appropriately
at religious venues.

When in Rome , you don’t wear a sports bra
and running shorts to St Peters.

Yada, Yada

Typical neocon hogwash. If McCain had been doing what Obama is doing, rightwing rodents typically would have praised McCain for such respectful behavior and bashed Obama for not doing the same. And if Obama had been the one visiting the Middle East with a Jew, OMG how the sh**t would have hit the fan!

BTW, there are muslims in Israel

I actually think westerners shouldn’t cater to extremists.  Our women our free.  If they don’t like it, tough.

I think they should be required to wear bullet proof clothing. OR some kind of bomb shelter attire. Just in case they get in the way of the Pals line of fire.

What he have here is Obama’s continual catering to Muslims, at the expense of the United States.  Why aren’t the angry feminists all over this one?  A dress code just for women?  Isn’t it obvious what this guy really is?

When in Rome , you don’t wear a sports bra
and running shorts to St Peters.

You are right about that. I spent a year in Europe a few decades ago. Saw many an instance where Americans did not show the proper respect at certain times and at specific places. But never once were they attacked or insulted by the local population, government, or a religious group. Never once witnessed anyone rioting or killing people because they were offended.

Just think, if in this country, we were offended by certain personal behavior, religious behavior, dress, and rituals.

Not heard of any western religion issuing a fatwa against any people of the Muslims faith because they are ill-informed and don’t conform to our rules of civilized behavior.

What Obama is doing is considerate and respectful.  There is absolutely no arrogance in his recommendation or suggestion or demand.

If one wonders what true arrogance looks like, have a gander;

I actually think westerners shouldn’t cater to extremists.  Our women our free.  If they don’t like it, tough.

THAT, my friends is cultural arrogance and asinine arrogance.

Oswaldo nailed it right on the head.

Why is like that?  Well, there are really one reason:

Because that is how you see it, and nothing will change your mind.  Your delusion is your reality and your delusional mind has caused you to miss reality half the time.  Perception is reality and you have no brain to counter otherwise.

H: You also gave the wrong answer to my question.  The right answer:

He’s a Muslim.  His father and grandfather were Muslim, he spent his childhood in a Muslim country, registered in school as a Muslim.  This is why he doesn’t know how many States there are in the US, and why he thinks he could be President for 10 years, and why he thinks only one bomb was dropped on Pearl Harbor.  These are things real Americans learn in childhood.  He was obviously leaning other things during his Muslim childhood.

Nunez on July 21, 2008 at 11:37 am

I understand you have extreme dislike about Obama…

Wrong.  If he weren’t running for President, I wouldn’t give a crap about him.  He is unsuitable for the job, that’s all.  If he were honest about being a Muslim, I could appreciate his honesty.  I detest liars, though.
Check out the principles of black liberation theology, then get back to me.  Educate yourself.  Read up on his childhood.
