Obama Brings Back Bush-Created Military Tribunals For Terror Detainees
And those little pops you’re hearing are heads exploding on the left.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he is restarting military tribunals for a small number of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo though with several new legal protections for defendants.
Obama said in a statement Friday that his approach is “the best way to protect our country, while upholding our deeply held values.”
The decision puts Obama in the position of reviving a Bush-era trial system he once assailed as deeply flawed — and opposed as a senator.
I’m a critic of Obama. I think he’s a terrible leader who, overall, is taking this country in the wrong direction. But when he’s right he’s right, and this was the right move.
Military tribunals are absolutely the correct way to handle detainees in the war on terror. They allow us to grant a level of due process to the detention without having to recognize that the detainees have the same level of access to the American judicial system as citizens.
The question of detainees in the war on terror has been a tricky one. A question that was unprecedented in the history of this country. Military tribunals are a good answer for it. Kudos to Obama for at least being pragmatic enough to recognize that.
Though Obama doesn’t deserve kudos for breaking yet another campaign promise. I’m happy with the outcome, but Obama still can’t be trusted to do what he says.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration has released a prisoner from Gitmo who is now heading for France.
