Obama And ‘Punitive Liberalism’ Explained

This article by Roger Kimball is a must-read, must-link and must-forward piece.

Kimball outlines the horrible guilt liberals feel when anyone succeeds, and their weird zero-sum attitude that any such success must have come at someone else’s expense.  There is no math or science to it, it is simply emotional vapors. It leads to anti-rationality: for example, the idea that taxes should be raised simply to punish the rich and successful, even if it generates less revenue for government. It is an appeal to emotion and base envy, is anything but ‘fair’, and actually works at cross-purposes with the public good. Not surprisingly Obama believes in it wholeheartedly:

ABC’s Charlie Gibson . . . observed that raising taxes led to decreased revenues: “Well, Charlie,” Obama replied, “what I’ve said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.”

That is liberal economics in a nutshell: put shackles on the wealthy simply so the rest of us don’t feel so bad.

And incidentally there’s a whole lot less wealthy people employing people or buying services that require people.

All because the gap between rich and poor is growing.  I hate to tell you but that gap will always grow because some people no matter what will never have anything.  They’ll spend more than make when they care to work.

On the other hand those of us who do do the right thing are standing on the shoulders of giants.  Of course each generation of people that do the right thing will be wealthier.

That’s the way it ought to be.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

This is true re-distribution of wealth.  At least we get 700 billion dollars worth of oil for 700 billion dollars.  With this we get more poor people, more entitlements, and less bang for our buck…

Even if the price of oil didn’t drop we’d whittle that number down if we exploited our domestic sources in ANWR, offshore and in the shale deposits.

Furthermore, buying oil from Canada or even Mexico isn’t that bad of a thing for us.  Canada buys a lot of stuff from us and Mexico needs something to provide some stability to provide for it’s people.

I suspect that the price would come down and we’d be keeping more of the money in our hemisphere.

I agree Whistler I don’t understand the left’s thinking that we should not drill our own oil and we expect the rest of the world to drill for their oil…
