Obama Administration Nixes Gun Rights In National Parks

Proponents of gun rights and individual liberty cheered when, under the Bush administration, the department of the interior dropped a ban on guns in national parks because the change in policy was a recognition that keeping and bearing arms is a right that cannot be taken away through some bureaucratic whim. Unfortunately, Obama doesn’t respect gun rights or individual liberty and has re-instituted the ban.
Indicating that he has no intention of being a friend to gun owners as he promised on the campaign trail.

WASHINGTON – A federal judge on Thursday blocked a federal rule allowing people to carry concealed, loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges.
The decision by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly halts a change in regulations issued in the waning days of the Bush administration and orders further review. She set an April 20 deadline for the Interior Department to review the rule and indicate its course of action in response to the injunction.
The rule, which took effect Jan. 11, allowed visitors to carry a loaded gun into a park or wildlife refuge as long as the person had a permit for a concealed weapon and the state where the park or refuge was located allowed concealed firearms. Previously, guns in parks had been severely restricted.
The Obama administration had said it was reviewing the Bush rule but had defended it in court.
Kendra Barkoff, a spokeswoman for Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, said Thursday the department is reviewing the injunction.

“Reviewing the injunction” is, of course, code for “placing it in bureaucratic purgatory from which it will probably never emerge under the Obama administration.”
Which is how the gun control nuts operate. They know that keeping and bearing arms is a right. They know that the Supreme Court has upheld it as a right. So all they can do is try to make it as hard as possible to exercise that right through a million ticky-tacky regulations and restrictions.
Because they have no respect for freedom.

Well more solo female hikers for predators to pick off, I am sure they are thrilled.

If this was such a great idea why did bush wait eight years to implement it? Hmmm…

If smoking bans are such a great idea, why did it take so many decades to implement them? (I, as a non-smoker, oppose them)

If women voting in the U.S. was such a great idea, why did it take so long to implement?

If ending slavery was such a great idea, why did it have to wait for Lincoln to end it?

If TV commentators feeling tingles up their leg at the mere mention of a candidate’s name is such a good thing… well…. nevermind.

    Hmmm?

The fact remains that — in a Constitutional Conservative’s eyes — the right thing got done.

In Minnesota, the state and national parks were open for hunting when I lived there many years ago. Don’t know the situation now.

  • SigFan

Interesting point Mickey and I don’t know the answer to that one – is open carry legal in Nat’l Parks and Wildlife Refuges? I personally wouldn’t have an issue with open carry or concealed, in fact when in a wilderness area it just makes sense to have some means of defense nearby.

We need fewer national parks. And fast.

It looks like the Second Amendment is being given “the death of a thousand cuts” by Obama. Not good for America.

  • Mickey

In Wisconsin we have about a million acres of national forest land and it is legal to carry and shoot any legal firearms year round in a responsible manner as long as you clean up all casing and target material. The government only requires that you use all safety measures that apply. Of course all hunting laws apply as well. We can carry a side arm at any time on national forest land as long as the holster is exposed.

    Jonny,

Yes, the almighty 0-bambam ad-menstruation did claim that they defended it in court.

But, the slight-of-hand part lies in the phrase where they said it was reviewing the Bush rule

The wording appears to be carefully-worded attempt to intentionally deflect attention away from the “reviewing” phrase and towards the “defended” phrase in order to assuage the fears of us gun-lubbers.

    It didn’t work.

If gun rights are sacred, and they can stand up in court, why does Teh Anointed One feel the need to review the policy?

I mean, other than to place his Death Touch upon it.

So don’t conceal that weapon. A holster on your side isn’t concealed.

Just did a quick search and found this:

Firearms were first banned in national parks in the 1930s in a bid to curb poaching. The current rules, implemented under President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s, allow visitors to national parks and refuges to possess firearms so long as they are “rendered temporarily inoperable or are packed, cased or stored in a manner that will prevent their ready use.”

The rest of the article can be found here:

The long and short looks like open carry under current law is banned in National Parks and Wildlife Reserves.

Rob, obviously you have a problem with either READING or COMPREHENSION (probably both)….Here, now I’m quoting from the exact snippet of the article YOU posted above, paragraph four:

“The Obama administration had said it was reviewing the Bush rule but had defended it in court.”

“DEFENDED IT IN COURT”….that means that the Obama administration SUPPORTED Bush’s stance that a CCP/CWP should allow a person to carry firearms in parks. Do you understand what that means? Habla ingles?

    From the Minnesota Post:

“Obama administration supports Bush rule on guns in parks, including Voyageurs
To the surprise of some of its friends, the Obama administration is supporting — for now — a midnight regulation by the Bush folks allowing concealed weapons in national parks, including Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota.”

In the past, Obama has done plenty to undermine the Second Amendment. But if you’re gunna bash his current policy stances, at least get your frikkin facts straight, Rob.

    This will never happen.

I called the forest ranger for our region and he said it’s ok as long as you use safety measures.

  • SigFan

Here in PA we have state gamelands that have target ranges as well. Pick up your brass, practice gun safety and a couple other restrictions like no more than 3 rounds in a magazine to prevent people from monopolizing the range and you’re good to go. What I’m not clear on is whether carry laws apply in Nat’l Parks. Even states that allow open carry do not have jusrisdiction over the Nat’l Park lands so I don’t know if it legally extends. I will see if I can research and come up with a definitive answer.

Gonna have to give this one the “wait and see”. But, if history is any indication, Obama’s teleprompter will tell him to nip this one in the bud.

And, yes, Bush was a gutless fart for not implementing this sooner, which would have proven beyond measure that CCW in our National parks presents no risk to the , animals, or plant life therein.

I guess the BHO administration will have to appeal this ruling to the next level then, correct? Criminals carry most of the time or have their lackies carry for them. Honest citizens, following court rulings that attempt to negate the Bill of Rights are sometimes overly honest, thereby opening themselves for attacks by armed criminals.

This is the price we pay for being good, honest citizens and teaching our children to be honest and law abiding also. That is what Jesus Christ admonished us to do. Render unto Caesar, support your government, no matter how corrupt or evil it appears to be. Anarchy would be worse.
