Obama: “We Don’t Need A Balanced Budget Amendment”
“We don’t need more studies. We don’t need a balanced budget amendment,” said the President during his press conference today. “We simply need to make these tough choices.”
Thing thing is that it’s pretty clear that the President and Congress need something to force them to make these “tough choices.” Statute already requires that Congress pass a budget by April 15th of every year. The House, under Democrat rule, hadn’t produced a budget since 2009 before the Republicans passed the Paul Ryan budget earlier this year.
The Senate still hasn’t passed a budget since 2009. What’s more, the national debt has been steadily increasing for decades now, with a short reversal during the Clinton administration under a Republican Congress. Even Obama’s proposed 2012 budget, introduced earlier this year, scheduled trillions of dollars in new debt every year for a decade.
Obama saying we don’t need a balance budget amendment sounds suspiciously, to me, like an addict saying he doesn’t need to go to recovery.
The first step is admitting there’s a problem, but it doesn’t seem the President is ready to do that just yet.
