Obama Ignoring Calls For Help In Evicting Occupy DC

I was in Washington DC recently and, while walking around doing a bit of sight seeing, managed to stumble across the Occupy DC encampment.  A lot has been said and written about the filth at these camps, and I can say now from first-hand experience that it’s all true.  Even on a cold, blustery day in DC the camp had an odor about it.

Understandably, Washington DC city officials want the camp ended due to public nuisance and health concerns.  Given the city’s unique status as a federal district, they’re asking President Obama to step in and assist with the eviction.  But the President, no doubt reticent to anger a core constituency heading into an election year, has so far been ignoring the requests.

While other liberal cities have ejected and dismantled Occupy sites for health and safety reasons, Washington, D.C. has not done so.  We now know why.  The Obama administration has refused to respond to the city’s appeals for help with OccupyDC encampment.

Yesterday in a second letter to the Obama administration Vincent Gray, Washington’s Democratic mayor, again pleaded with the federal government and asked them to evict the OccupyDC protesters who are encamped at McPherson Square in downtown Washington.  The mayor says the site is infested with rats, contains unsanitary conditions, is a danger to protesters themselves and has been a continual drain on the city’s police and health department budgets.

Yesterday we learned as early as December 16 Mayor Gray formallyy pleaded for help from the National Park Service. The park is on federal land and the Park Service has jurisdiction over the park . There is a second OccupyDC encampment on federal land at Freedom Plaza.  So far the federal government has remained mum.

This compelled Mayor Gray to issue a second letter which was reported this morning by the WashingtonPost. In the new letter, the Mayor asked the National Park Service to remove the protesters and close down the McPherson Square site. Mayor Gray said McPherson Square was afflicted with “dangerous rat infestation” and other health and sanitary problems. The mayor added that many of the protesters themselves faced hypothermia due to the cold. He repeated his request for the federal government to reimburse the financially strapped city for the unexpected expenses caused by the Occupy protesters.

“I am concerned that the letter I sent you on December 16 remains unanswered,” Gray concluded in the letter.

The Constitution protects the rights of Americans to peacefully assemble.  I don’t think there’s anything peaceful about a filthy, rat-infested camp in the public square.

What does it say about a President and his party when fear of filthy protesters and the political fallout of cleaning up their mess, prevents you from governing?

    • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

It says the Democrats don’t support or get involved with the OWS movement like the Conservatives did with the Tea Party.

While I support OWS’s right to assemble I find what Rob thinks as to what is or is not peaceful rather hilarious and dim witted.

Being not up to the standards of cleanliness in Rob eyes is not being peaceful? An assault on the senses, huh Rob? Get real.

By having a so called rat-infested camp in the public square is also not peaceful? Is this some how and evil plot the OWS’s planned on having and using to attack D.C. in some sort of skewed pied piper’s wet dream?

Get behind American rights even if you don’t agree with the protesting agree with their right to do it…..

I don’t think it’s snobbery to find rat-infested encampments in the public square to be objectionable.

So you're now declaring an American right to create a public health hazard?

      • Demosthenes

“So you’re now declaring an American right to create a public health hazard?”

That is grasping at straws, your so called health hazards. They do exist but declaring that is justification to trample one of the basic rights? Nope, not good enough.

Wonder what you had to say about the Tea Party demo’s?  How much was spent on clean up?  Seems the rats know where to hang out.  I agree with freedom to assemble however not when it is done unlawfulls. stinks and I have to pay for the cleanup.  At least the Tea Party paid up front and was legal.

      • Demosthenes

I have no idea and really neither do you on what was or was not paid for by the tea party occupations. I do however support their right to assemble though, even if they are not bathed and beautiful.

    Fed area,  Fed problem

What will they do when they have an outbreak of typhus, TB, hepatitis or rabies from the rats?  Or something even worse.   Then will they do something about it?  Oh yeah, I’m sorry I forgot—–they will blame Bush.

I feel sorry for any rat that wanders into an OWS camp.

Hope they start freezing to death.

One wonders about these rats.  Don’t they have the good sense NOT to hang out with hippies?  :^)

My brother once got in trouble when he was in grad school in Berkeley for cleaning up the garbage dump beside the house in which he lived.  The liberals thought it was a garden, and were wondering why there were so many rats.  Duh.

It’s federal land, pull ALL local Police, EMS and Fire protection to save money.
