Obama: Cut Defense Spending Not Food Stamps

Food Stamps

Even as the President escalates the war in Libya, he wants to slash defense spending rather than the entitlement programs that are eating this country alive.

“I think what’s absolutely true is that core commitments that we make to the most vulnerable have to be maintained,” Obama said. “A lot of the spending cuts that we’re making should be around areas like defense spending as opposed to food stamps.”

I don’t see defense spending as any sort of a sacred cow. The military, much like any other branch of the federal government, has plenty of bloat and waste that should be cut (case in point). But entitlements cannot be a scared cow either.

Dependence on the government among Americans has been setting records in recent years. It’s not something we can afford.

Senator Marco Rubio said, a few weeks ago, that the federal government doesn’t need more taxes. It needs more taxpayers. His meaning is that America needs more independent, self-sufficient citizens.

Continuing to feed entitlement bloat not only worsens our budget situation, it promotes government dependency.
