Obama Claims He Goes Skeet Shooting “All The Time”

obama-skeet

When Democrats get into a gun-grabby sort of mood, they’re always quick to defend themselves by cloaking themselves in America’s hunting/shootings ports heritage. They always express their support for hunting. It’s just those nasty, scary-looking assault weapons they’re against.

Case in point, President Obama claiming that he and his Camp David guests go skeet shooting all the time:

FF: Have you ever fired a gun?

Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time.

FF: The whole family?

Not the girls, but oftentimes guests of mine go up there. And I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations. And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake.

Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas. And if you grew up and your dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were ten, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles, and that became part of your family’s traditions, you can see why you’d be pretty protective of that.

So it’s trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes.

If this were true, where are the pictures? We’ve got reams of pictures of Obama golfing and vacationing and frolicking on various beaches. But not a single picture of a gun in his hands, despite his claim that he goes skeet shooting all the time?

Maybe the President is, you know, lying.

But this whole “I support shooting sports” thing is misleading. Not because protecting gun rights for shooting sports isn’t important – it is, definitely – but rather because 2nd amendment was about much more than that. The 2nd amendment was about self defense from other citizens, our own government should it run off the rails and foreign invaders.

The 2nd amendment isn’t about shooting skeet and shooting deer. Or, at least, it’s not just about that.

The 2nd Amendment isn’t about self defense either. It is about the ability to raise an army.

Whenever I hear the argument that the second amendment is about people having guns to keep the “government in check”, I think of the Whiskey Rebellion. In 1792, a bunch of 18th Century Tea Party types decided that they had enough of taxes from Washington (literally, George at this time) and they started a rebellion against the government. Washington responded by calling up around 12,000 militia (as they did not have a US army to speak of at this time) and ended the rebellion.

So, when you think about it, our founders in fact did allow fire arm ownership in order to keep a militia, but it was not to “keep the government in it’s place” but rather, it was used, by our forefathers, to assert the power of the federal government to collect taxes.

That has to be hard for some in the NRA crowd to accept.

Can you provide a link to some kooks opinion to back up this assertion you just pulled out of your butt?

That should prove easier than trying to come up with any facts.

      • Game

You want me to post a link on the Whiskey Rebellion? You think I made it up? Are you for real? It is called “Google” it is this new contraption that allows you to look stuff up on your own without me, or anybody posting a link. If you did, you would see that my basic facts about the Rebellion are established.

    • chris

Just a little correction: the original Boston Tea Party was not about smaller government and lower taxes. That is a common misunderstanding among conservatives. What they were protesting against were foreign governments and corporations controlling their lives through taxes and regulations, aka Britain and their East India Tea company. They were actually in favor of a more powerful local government (and the required taxes) that could stand up to Britain. Samuel Adams, one of the key figures of the protest, was himself a career politician

      • slackwarerobert

Nothing wrong with a career politician as long as they don’t get a retirement check from the taxpayer, or taxpayer funded companies.

    • chris

Regarding the Whiskey Revolution, the reason why conservatives don’t like to talk about it is because the protestors of the Whiskey tax were the predecessors of the Democratic party, lead by Thomas Jefferson. The “democrats” at the time were very much opposed to Federal control and saw any kind of Federal tax as a form of “taxation without representation”. It was the Whig party, which eventually became Lincoln’s Republican party, that pushed for a stronger Federal government and taxes.

      • sbark

You might like to claim yourselves as “predecessors” of the Democratic Party as lead by TJefferson………but “evolution” has taken you so far away form 99% of what TJ beleived………he would not recognize you………..and your ilk wouldnt let him inside a DNC convention……let alone JFK…….
much more recent predecessors are also Karl Marx, Stalin, Lenin, Mao Castro and Hitler……..at least there you’ll find relatives that look alike in your family tree

        • slackwarerobert

Sadly the “republicans” are more akin to Mussolini, and other dictator followers. As long as they get some scraps they will go along with the dictator.

        • noblindersonme

I can’t believe a wild eyed conservative nut like you sbark would make the hypocritcial remark that’ evolution has taken you so far from what Jeferson believed etc – he would not recognize you etc ‘ !
It is a true statement that, yes indeed, what a founding father believed did evolve and morph into many diferent pathways over the decades and the democrats can not lay claim only to the betterments of those beliefs for their own benefit today! Once a great thinking democrat like Jefferson, always a great thinking democrat ? Not really!
But you republicansCONSERVATIVES do exactly that when you WANT to lay claim to the lie that republicans was the party that fought for the freedom of the blacks from slavery to today!!! The republicans were the party of Lincoln ! Don’t you guys crow that oh so dispicably often!
History is not to be interpreted in that sort of manipulated way . Lincoln would not recognize YOU today sbark ! he would be disgusted by what you did to his party! The door of logic swings both ways!

        • chris

Actually I claim myself to be a predecessor of the party of Abe Lincoln and you the party of TJefferson. Honest Abe would have been way more comfortable in the DNC than the RNC.

On a more interesting note, Carl Marx was alive during the same time period as Abraham Lincoln, and in fact they exchanged notes to each other. Marx had sent Abe a letter congratulating him on his re-election and ending slavery, and Abe’s secretary had responded cordially:

          http://casey-pops.blogspot.com/2012/11/marx-letter-to-lincoln.html

Of course Abe wasn’t a communist as we know it today and there is no comparing Abe’s movement of emancipation to the revolutions that were going to happen in Europe, but it’s interesting to note that the first republican president was so aligned with the archenemy of today’s GOP (Marx).

‘I’m for some gun regulation ,but we have enough , we don’t need more ‘- port retreats with his words . Guess what ! MOST DEMOCRATS AGREE ON THAT!!! Which gun regulations do you support Port ?
80-90% of Americans want more strident back ground checks at gun shows , more regulation on miltary style assault weapons , a reenactment to the 2004 ban , ban on the ‘cop killer ‘ bullets etc. Do you really want realistic debate here port , or will you just go back to flinging insults when we disagree with you about ‘compromise’ those most relevant issues!
” Port – I am for some regulation ! ” Except when a democrat makes a sober suggestion then I(port) never want any regulation because them damn democrats just want to push us to that slippery slope!.
See why things NEVER get done! Until the next wreck of a human being shoots dozens of innocents and the wagons get circled again!

          • slackwarerobert

cop killer bullets? All these nuts wore body armor and you want to ban the bullets that will penetrate that. Everyone should have a few thousand rounds of armor piercing bullets just in case. I always carry a magazine of 15 rounds of them on me. What good is a gun that can’t handle the danger in front of you? Me and my family are supposed to die because an out of control swat team can’t read? No, they are why I have the bullets, every one who tries to protect themselves with a 6 shot revolver gets killed, I prefer they die. They are not cop killers, they are color of law stoppers.
What do you suggest I use on an armored limo that can withstand a meteor impact? My representatives won’t answer.

          • slackwarerobert

But you never support common sense regulations, like ending all gun free zones so you can kill the killer before he creates a massacre. Making the law apply to everyone, if no one can protect themselves, then the elite can’t hire someone to protect them either. If they are military weapons, then only the military, not homeland security, schools, obama, etc.

Repeal the reagan assault weapons ban entirely, or at least write a waiver in it so you can purchase one when you turn 21. Why are you denied a weapon just because you weren’t born when the law was passed.

        • http://sayanythingblog.com Rob

And none of your argument addresses the fact that the 2nd amendment was very much about arming the citizenry against the potential of a tyrannical government.

This is reality. If you don’t like that, try to amend the 2nd amendment, and good luck with that.

          • borborygmi

It was reality then but is plain silly now. IF the gov’t is tyrannical it would mean that the total control of the armed forces and they would follow the tyrannical gov’t . It they did people with ARs aren’t going to match up really well. Last time the Armed Militia stood up to the Fed Gov’t 600,000 Americans lost there lives and the armed militia lost. Do you really feel we are close to civil war? Plain silly.
We are no where near this precipice. . WHen the Second Amendment was adapted there was little disparity between the arms of the Gov’t and the arms of the citzenry. Today they are at polar opposites. This renders the the 2nd amendment and’ it will protect us against the “tyrannical gov’t”‘ archaic. Argue that you need the 2nd Amendment for self defense against the ordinary bad guy, but to stave off the Jack booted thugs, laughable. ….unless you wish the ordinary citizen the right to own and bear all military hardware……

      • Game

“So, because one group of people used their right to keep and bear arms for what might be considered illegitimate purposes, nobody should get the right to keep and bear arms?”

How did you get that out of what I posted? I did not call for any gun bans or say I supported any gun policy. I just stated the irony of the fact that are founders used the militia created by private gun owners to destroy a rebellion lead by anti-tax folks.

By the way, two of the members of the Whiskey Rebellion were tried for High Treason and sentenced to be hanged. Only a pardon by Washington saved their lives.

        • noblindersonme

Game” I see you are learning the Game played here! Port said you called for guns banned because he read between the lines of your post and only he has the talent to se the truth !

      • noblindersonme

So port takes the childish slant here , notice how he slips back and forth from childish simplistic takes on a issue ‘ because some use guns for evil ‘nobody should use guns’ . Simplistic BS because NEVER in this debate has a serious democrat made such an argument. Let’s regulate cars PORT!!! no one needs to drive drunk or race up to 140 mph!!!!
port always winds himself in his pretzel logic by making the simplistic rants then jumps to argue we don’t understand the complexities of the second amendment. or the simplicity of the second amendment – we never know where he will run.
When the vast majority of Americans ARE saying we should ban all guns THEN make your claims of second amendment infringement . Today only a very few believe that , BUT A MAJORITY DO WANT A BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS AND BACKGROUND CHECKS AT GUN SHOWS etc. My Gawd is the truth here that hard to face!

        • slackwarerobert

A few years ago they did a study and 53% of men would rape a women if they could get away with it. Does this mean we should toss out laws against rape? After all a majority are in favor of it. The problem is the respondents are not told that there is no way to do a background check in the first place, and they are not told that there will be no assault weapons in the assault weapons ban bill.

My car gets 37% better mileage if I stay above 100mph. Should I waste gas and cause global warming so you can say 140mph is bad?
It is safer, if they can’t catch up to you, they can’t hit you. It is called common sense.
I think everyone should have to get there license while drunk, if you can drive safely when drunk, you can do it sober without a problem.

    • slackwarerobert

Isn’t that what we have been saying since his gun grabbing started. WE are the militia, we can’t respond to trouble if we have no guns. And even after the uprising, washington didn’t ban guns as only needed by the militia. But check your history, I bet the whiskey tax was passed by congress without bribes, and signed into law, it wasn’t passed by a supreme court that rewrote the law and declared it constitutional. And washington didn’t force you to buy the whiskey or pay a fine.

Mitt’s pandering was obnoxious. However, he wasn’t trying to sell himself as pro 2nd amendment rights while he was trying to eliminate 2nd amendment rights as Obama did.
