Obama Campaign: The Mandate Isn’t A Tax

Yesterday the Supreme Court rejected the Obama administration’s argument that the health insurance mandate was justified under the commerce clause. Instead, the Supreme Court upheld the mandate under the idea that it was a tax on people without insurance.

That wasn’t good news for Obama or Democrats who aren’t looking forward to a foray into an election year having to defend a half-trillion dollar tax hike on the uninsured. So their solution? Keep repeating the lie that the mandate isn’t a tax over and over again until someone believes them.

Case in point, Obama surrogate Deval Patrick:

A top surrogate for President Obama insisted Friday that the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act was not a tax — despite the fact that the Supreme Court narrowly preserved the law on those grounds.

“Don’t believe the hype that the other side is selling,” Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick told reporters on a conference call.

“This is a penalty,” Patrick said. “It’s about dealing with the freeloaders.”

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. Or so the saying goes.

Meanwhile, where’s an update on where we’re at with tax hikes thanks to Obamacare:
