NYC Tunnel Terror Attack Investigation Was Leaked To The Press

I wasn’t aware this morning when I first posted on the story that the media was reporting the investigation into the plot to plow up tunnels in New York City based on an anonymous leak from a government official.
What is especially troublesome about this is that only two of the eight suspects involved in this plot are in custody. The rest are likely headed down whatever rat hole they can find.
How truly pathetic is this? Shame not only on the government official who jeopardized this investigation and made us all less safe by leaking to the media, but shame also on the journalists who printed the leak knowing full well that the investigation was still in the balance.
These journalists have got to start putting national security and public safety ahead of their blood-thirsty desire to go to press with ever single secret they learn from leaks.

MacRanger is on the case concerning who leaked:

I’m looking for the transcript of that now. That said of course we have no evidence of this, but if proved true it would blockbuster. Neither enjoy any so-called protection under the first admendment and if found guilty of leaking could be censured or removed from office.

Follow the link to find out who and why…

I think it’s coming from liberals in Congress.

Because they hate their country and want innocent civilians to die in terrorist attacks. Right?

  • Bat One

As do I, although with no word yet (at least that I have seen – been on vacation for a week!) that there has been a grand jury empaneled. I have to believe we may be in for quite a wait.

Still, considering Judy Miller’s time in jail for contempt, and the whole series of recent rulings against the indiscriminate irresponsibility of the press, the idea of Bill Keller going to jail for contempt, though sad, is still worth the wait.

    Bat One,

I look forward to finding out definitively when the indictments are unsealed.

I think it’s coming from liberals in Congress.

To what end , what would they gain?

    Bat One,

Yes, I do believe the press in general, and the NYT’s in particular, will rue they day they pressed for prosection in the Plame kerfuffle. Oh, also keep in mind that since the offenses fall under the Espionage Act and the National Security Act, they may go through the FIS Court, and such a grand jury could be operating even as we type.

    And what Dave said too.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

    To make people feel safer?

    Rodney,

Good Point! Despite all the leaks over these past few years from State and CIA, the Bush administration overall has an admirable record of keeping secrets secret.

Still, the delicious nature of the irony here must be driving poor Karl Rove nuts. Revenge is indeed a dish best served cold.

  • Dave

Ah, I was close. I knew it was because they were evil, though.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

To what end , what would they gain?

Favor from the Press to get further good coverage later.

The ability to leak this rather than have it announced from the administration.

Spin on the story that this was a success by the FBI rather than the overall global war on terror.

    Reporter chicks.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Anyone think this craps coming out of the administration?

While I don’t hold much respect for bureaucrats, I doubt anyone in the know in a law enforcement agency would leak this.

I think it’s coming from liberals in Congress.

  • diane

Guess which side of this discussion sounds logical to an onlooker?

  • http://www.standingonthesoapbox.org/ Andrew

I have a question: If this plot was all under wraps and suspects were being tracked down and law enforcement was all over it, then why did security at the tunnels increase ten-fold AFTER the story came out? I mean, if there was such a danger, then where was the increased security last week?

    Just wondering…

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

I’m just so agreeable that I agree with Dave again.

A.J. Strata is on to the notion that the “leak” on this story may have been because of the previously leaked SWIFT and NSA surveillance stories.

In other words, the reported arrests, and the 5 missing terrorist conspirators, because the NYT and LAT had blown the FBI/foreign intelligence services investigation by releasing the details of those two operations.

Given what we’ve been told thus far, it seems safe to assume that at least some of the electronic surveillance was done by NSA. And clearly the “follow the money” aspect is readily apparent as well.

Some twit had earlier suggested that because local law enforcement had apparently not been informed, that the leak of this story was of little consequence or real damage. But no one with any experience or half a brain would expect that NY/NJ Port Authority Transit Police would have been notified about the preliminary result of an ongoing overseas counter-terrorist intelligence operation anyway. That idea is just plain silly.

More and more, this looks like an operation that was cut short early… mopst likely, as A.J. surmises, because of previous leaks and publication of TOP SECRET intelligence gathering information by the liberal NYT and LAT.

My point is, maybe the story coming out actually increased the safety of New York City.
