NRSC: Heitamp Will Bring Obama’s Energy Policies To North Dakota
11:03am
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has a new ad out hitting Heidi Heitkamp on energy issues (and featuring this SAB headline):
Heitkamp, of course, will claim that she’ll “fight for North Dakota” on energy issues. Unfortunately, her words don’t match reality.
Heitkamp has gone on the record saying that she’ll vote to keep Senator Harry Reid as Majority Leader if she’s elected. That would be the same Senator Reid who once said, “Coal makes us sick, oil makes us sick. It’s global warming. It’s ruining our country. It’s ruining our world.”
So Heidi Heitkamp, the former EPA lawyer, would keep as the leader of the US Senate where she will be just 1 vote out of 100, a man who thinks the oil and coal North Dakota produces is “ruining our world.” And why wouldn’t she? According to FEC disclosures Reid’s Searchlight Leadership Fund has funneled $10,000 into her campaign directly, and Reid’s Super PAC has independently spent $1,278,300 so far in 2012 to support Heitkamp’s campaign including $228,847 in the last week according to OpenSecrets.org.
Add in to this the fact that Heitkamp’s #2 source of campaign contributions is the Weitz & Luxenberg law firm, an activist law firm engaged in anti-fracking lawsuits, and you get a picture of a candidate who is pro-energy on the campaign trail but is heavily supported by virulently anti-coal and anti-oil interests.
A pro-North Dakota candidate wouldn’t support Harry Reid for Marjority Leader. A pro-North Dakota candidate would return Reid’s money, and money from other interests who would hamstring our state’s energy industry. Heitkamp isn’t really a pro-North Dakota candidate.
