Now That Hillary’s Calling General Petraeus A Liar Is Proving Unpopular…

…she’d like to go on record with how much she admires him.
Hillary said this to General Petraeus during his testimony before Congress:

“You have been made the de facto spokesman for what many of us believe to be a failed policy. Despite what I view as your rather extraordinary efforts in your testimony … I think that the reports that you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief.”

What can that possibly mean other than the fact that she thinks the General was, well, lying?
Now, however, Hillary is saying this:

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, praised Gen. David Petraeus Tuesday, as she continues to face heat from several of her Republican White House rivals for not directly repudiating a MoveOn.org ad that questioned the top U.S. commander in Iraq’s honesty.
“I have said publicly on numerous occasions, including at the last hearing, how much I respect Gen. Petraeus and his service to our country,” Clinton told CNN’s John Roberts on “American Morning.”
“I speak for myself,” said the New York Democrat when asked if she thought the ad, which ran in The New York Times last week, was out of line. “I am a very strong admirer of Gen. Petraeus and his record of service for our country and the dedication that he has brought to a very difficult job that many of us think does not have a military solution,”

So she admires the General who she has also accused of misrepresenting the situation in Iraq to Congress in order to please President Bush? Or, at the very least, on Bush’s orders?
Hillary’s trying to have it both ways, and it just doesn’t work like that.

I am no fan of Hillary…but being skeptical, and not swallowing either sides propaganda is wise.

I have a close friend who is a ret. Major who states.., “by the time you reach General, and in order to reach General, you must step over the line that divides soldier from politician and swallow more of what comes down from the top than speak for those that are below”.

Propaganda comes from the left and propaganda comes from the right…. a lie is a lie no matter who tells it.

You can’t malign a hero and get away with it…

With an unforunate number of voters, possibly a majority, she will get away with it as did Bill Clinton. They stake out every side of every issue and can always quote the public record wherein they took the most popular position, when it comes time to vote.

Reporter: ‘Hillary, Petraeus has been proven wrong about the surge, what do you say?’ Hillary: “Didn’t I call him a liar during the hearings?’

Reporter: “Hilary, the surge is working, we are winning, Petraeus was right, what do you say?’ Hillary: ‘Didn’t I say he was a our greatest General and I supported him?’

She cannot lose any argument, she is on record on every side of every issue!

woofie regaled us with a pile of crap about Petraeus over the weekend, and yet he has not returned to further elucidate upon his theme. Imagine that.

a lie is a lie no matter who tells it.

Thanks for stating the obvious. As far as who is lying I am reminded of this old saw ‘How do you know when a Democrat is lying? Answer – when their lips are moving…’

    imagine,

Retired Major, huh? No less than 20 years in uniform and the farthest he got was Major?

I don’t suppose it has occurred to you that your friend’s opinion just might be colored by the fact that his own ascent up the career ladder was stymied at such a modest level? I’d guess that of all the military veterans who comment here, we could come up with quite list of Colonels and Generals whose political skills in no way diminished their devotion to the men who they commanded, or those men’s respect for them.

Fact is, David Petraeus, Peter Pace, and Richard Meyers are all men whose intelligence and skills, political skills included, took them to the very highest levels within their respective services, yet whose relationship with the men they commanded was one of mutual respect and admiration.

Thanks for those deep thoughts imagine. Since you have now obliquely called the good General a liar, would you like to actually provide evidence to support that?

And before you retreat into your “I’m just a skeptic” defense, one can only remain a skeptic when there is a lack of evidence. General Patraeus gave specific facts and figures to support his report. Now, either you accept his evidence or you dispute it. If you dispute it, you are calling Patraeus a liar. It’s worse if you dispute it without supporting evidence of your own as Hillary has. That makes you a liar.

So she admires the General who she has also accused of misrepresenting the situation in Iraq…

For once, I believe her. After all, she’s still married to the man she admires. ;)

Propaganda comes from the left and propaganda comes from the right…. a lie is a lie no matter who tells it.

The problem is not so much “calling Petraeus a liar is bad because he’s a General.” The problem is implying that someone with Petraeus’ stellar service record is lying without any real proof outside of a political agenda.
