November 22, 1963 – In Remembrance

Today marks the 45th anniversary of the passing of a great man. One who left his mark on his country and his culture. One who is still quoted to this day. On November 22, 1963, the world little noted his passing in the shock and outpouring of grief over the assassination of JFK. That man was Clive Staple Lewis…oddly enough, like JFK, ”Jack” to his friends.
C. S. Lewis, author of The Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia, was a contemporary and friend of J. R. R. Tolkien. He was also an atheist who came to Christianity, in his own words, “kicking and screaming”, who became one of its strongest apologists.

You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England.

-Surprised by Joy
His books have been translated into dozens of languages and sold millions of copies over the years. Anthony Hopkins portrayed him in the movie Shadowlands (1993), the story of his romance with American poet Joy Gresham, who died of cancer a mere handful of years after they met.
His life was rich and varied. His sorrows deep and vast. His legacy is enduring.
In our remembrance of those who passed this day, one might do well to remember what can be accomplished with just a pair of Jacks!

His books are highly entertaining and well worth your time whether you’re a Christian or not.

Right on, brother! Lewis proved that the “modern man” can be inspired by the Creator. Good post.

I didn’t mention his sci-fi trilogy, but Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength stand up pretty good as well.

JFK killed! Just another day at a hot, lonely desert Marine Base. Heard the news, no televisions around our Battalion that I recall then, a few radios’ on, but most of us, just heard the news from someone else and had to keep working. We may have talked about it that night in the barracks and during the following week, but I was young, selfish and don’t remember too much about how my fellow Marines reacted.

I don’t know where I was, maybe a bar, maybe at my girlfriend’s house; but I do recall watching the funeral in black and white for a few hours.

    Eneils,

I remember it, too. I was in the second grade in Arlington, Texas at the time, and can clearly remember them coming and getting our teacher out of class and her cries out in the hallway when they told her.

    Helluva day.

I remember that day, and I remember it well.

I was stationed at the US Navy training facility at Treasure Island, in the middle of the bay, between Oakland and San Francisco, California. It was a 48 week school preparing ET’s(Electronics Technicians) to serve out in the fleet.
I remember sitting there, late that morning, with some old WWII Chief instructing us as to the proper protocol to be be used in voice communications, when he heard the two receivers monitoring AP and UPI with their teletypes go ringing off the scale. One bell was an important story…these transmissions came in with eight bells.
It was quite a day, scared the hell out us neophytes, and the veterans just somehow knew that everything would be ok.

I can still remember, quite vividly, that classroom, the Chief ripping the message off the teletype, him telling us to remain calm as he read the message, and then telling us to get to the chow hall and report back as soon as we could.

45 years ago, hardly seems that long ago and far away.

Interesting how we remember Kennedy, and not CS Lewis.

Thanks for letting us know that there was more than one big name who passed on that day.

I love Lewis’s stuff. I will have to read some more.

    Thanks,

I could not improve on Gene’s comments about your posting this reminder of an exceptional man!
