Not Quite Dead: Monty Python To Reunite?
Maybe they’re feeling much better.
According to a blurb over at the Daily Beast Monty Python may reunite.
Huh?
In a way I kind of hope not. Why? Because some things should maybe be left alone. I mean, those guys were absolutely some of the funniest and most original sketch artists ever. In fact, some of their bits have become part of our national culture and part of a common lexicon. “And now for something completely different” is heard daily somewhere. The Dead Parrot bit is, well, everybody knows that one, as well as the Lumberjack song, the Ministry of Silly Walks, and of course, Spamspamspamspamwonderfulspam.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the stupidest – and funniest – movies ever made. It had no point and made no sense whatsoever, God bless it.
I first stumbled across Monty Python in the early seventies while flipping through late night TV channels – there was no cable so my choices were limited – and happened upon the Flying Circus doing the “Dead Bishop” skit. I did a double take, sat down, and started laughing. I’ve been laughing at them ever since. They were fresh and face hurting, stomach cramping funny.
Maybe that’s why I’m a little hesitant about them getting back together. I wonder just how fresh and funny they can be now, or if they’ll be parodies of their old selves by rehashing bits that were done by much, much younger men. I kind of like remembering them just the way they were.
But, if they get back together I’ll probably give them a look. You never know, they may just get some of that old magic back. What’s the worst that could happen? I’ll have to sit and watch them play again?
Torture in a comfy chair. I can handle that.
