Not A Good Sign: Republicans Swoon After Meeting With Obama
A few days ago Obama said too bad “I won” to requests for tax cuts in his “economic stimulus” abomination. Now Republicans are swooning after The One’s third meeting with them today:
Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) said that Obama was sincere and “impressive” during his meeting with Republicans Tuesday afternoon.
“There’s real desire in this room to figure a way back to prosperity,” Inglis wrote on Twitter. “[The president] and Republicans here [are] expressing deep concern about unemployment.”
“If [the] President carries this on it does open door for a new tone!” Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) exclaimed.
“Sharp differences are muted,” Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) Twittered.
Inglis said that a comment by Obama that he would rather be a one-term president who addressed the economy than a two-term president who did not went particularly well.
Most nauseating moment:
A GOP source to TIME’s Jay Newton-Small: Nearly as many House Republicans sought to get their photos taken with Obama as questioned him about the stimulus during their meeting.
This, combined with Republicans scrambling all over themselves to placate the media with assurances that of course they want Obama to be successful, makes me wonder if the GOP is even interested in being an opposition party or if they’ve just resigned themselves to being the folks who just want to grow spending and government a little more slowly.
