Northwestern University Cancels Obama’s Spiritual Leader’s Honorary Degree
One wonders if the cancellation has more to do with Wright’s conspiracy mongering and America-damning or to do with Wright’s inconvenience for the Obama campaign.
May 1 (Bloomberg) — Northwestern University withdrew an invitation for the Reverend Jeremiah Wright to receive an honorary degree at this year’s commencement.
Wright, former pastor to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, was selected to be honored at the June ceremony in Evanston, Illinois, on the recommendation of faculty committees, Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said in a statement.
“In light of the controversy around Dr. Wright and to ensure the celebratory character of commencement not be affected, the university has withdrawn its invitation to Dr. Wright,” Cubbage said.
Ah, so it’s the controversy that caused the university to cancel the degree and not Wright’s nutty beliefs about things like the American government creating AIDS to wipe out blacks.
See, the conspiracy theories were ok as long as the spotlight wasn’t on Wright. But now that the university stands to create a huge spectacle by giving this crackpot an honorary degree? Suddenly things aren’t so “ok” any more.
I don’t know what’s worse for Northwestern. That they were going to give Wright a degree in the first place, or that they don’t have the courage to follow through with it now that we’re all paying attention.
